I am searching for a reliable spare tire kit for my new Prius Prime as I often drive from the US to Canada and do remote cycling and camping with my Prius. Would the dealer have OEM kits or are there aftermarket options. I just don’t feel comfortable on certain trips to be without an option to simply change the tire.

    I doubt there’s a readymade kit. @Hammersmith has compiled a summary of what’s needed.

Depending on how far off the beaten path your going to wonder - I'd carry a full size or compact spare tire and highway plug kit. Verify that the Toyota tire pump is in good working order biannually. If you don't know how to use anything, print out instructions and shove them into your glove box or jack well.

    Hope this helps...

i have been considering the ez spare wheel if i have to go on a cross country trip. there's the ease of mind knowing there's a spare tire in the back if needed.

I'm just going to do my obligatory post where I say you can just get the Toyota OEM spare wheel, tool kit, and a tire from TireRack and save anywhere from $75 to $200 over the aftermarket spare kits. The only difference is the spiffy bags some of the aftermarket kits come with.

And I second the suggestion to just get a full size wheel and tire if you're going to a remote or rugged area.

The bottle jack will be too tall to get under the car as the jacking point will be lower than the standard ground clearance with a flat tire.
The only viable option is a scissors jack.

Whatever tire and wheel combination you choose, it will need to be retained in the storage area. Toyota recommends this method of strapping it in.

The equivalent straps can be had from the hardware department of any Walmart at about $6 a pair.

I would use the front cargo hooks illustrated in the Gen 5 manual with the inside "bowl" of the tire facing up. The "bowl can be used for storage.

Putting the tire and fastening it forward still allows access to the rear compartment to store the jack and other tire changing tools.

I prefer using a durable RV tire cover of the proper size to cover the tire.[/QUOTE]
