Honda's 2009 NAVTEQ Navigation Benefits Study shows non-hybrid drivers relying on navigation systems use 12% less fuel and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 21%. I guess you would slash these percentages in half to three-quarters as it applies to a Prius?
I'd imagine the reason for that is if you're relying on the device's directions, you'll generally stay a little closer to the speed limit and be more attentive to upcoming stops. That's just my little rationalization.
I believe the maps combined with decent software will yield the best way to get from point A to point B. Not sure what Toyota uses for maps - but Navteq are amazingly accurate, and come out quarterly. Even small details like a tiny nearby park - the parking lot itself is accurately mapped!
I remember reading where the next-gen Audi SatNav system will give you the choice of "quickest", "shortest" or "most ecologically friendly" routes. (I believe I read it in last month's Automobile Magazine). It takes into account emissions and things like pedal application, traffic flow, altitude changes, etc.
I'm trying to figure out the disconnect between fuel and carbon dioxide emissions? Are the drivers breathing less with Navteq? Or perhaps the frustrated paper map users are setting their maps on fire...maybe using them to send smoke signals?
umm...seems to me that NAV saves gas because you dont wander around lost, take the most direct route (if you so choose to do so), etc.
Still doesn't explain why fuel use would be 12% lower, while carbon dioxide production would be 21% lower... Twelve and twelve would make sense.
i can see how the CO2 decrease would be different than fuel decrease. not all fuel burned is equal. even with its atkinson cycle engine, the Pri still runs more efficiently at certain speeds than others. a route with less stops, lights, turns, etc. would not only be more efficient mileage-wise, but also more efficient driving-wise.
Please explain it then. What is all of that extra 9% of the fuel turning into if not carbon dioxide. I want to see a balance, because your explanation doesn't work for me.
well, i guess if this mixture of gasoline burned at the same ratio all the time. i guess CO2 output would correlate more closely to MPG's. but that would assume no other particulates in the exhaust, same burn ratio all the time, etc. so if burning very lean or burning very rich, is the CO2 output to distance traveled always the same? well, to be honest with ya, i dont have a clue, but just dont see that as being possible especially considering that a car would easily get more than 100 mpg if it were just 50% efficient in its use of the energy gasoline provides. with a typical engine being the worst option around for "stretching" HCx's, it just does not compute
contacting NavTek regarding spelling errors on Road Is there any way to contact NavTek and remedy a typing error on the map? of all the streets to be misspelled, it is my own street. I have to view it every time I drive my little Prius! It is soooo irritating to say the least. I am still getting the hang of finding directions etc, as the system doesnt seem to allow me to plug in compass points although the screen shows a compass but it remains darkened and untouchable. wonder why?
The link between fuel use and CO2 emissions should be a Conservation of Mass issue, so the disconnect seems to violate basic physics. Ratios, lean or rich mixture, Atkinson cycle, thermodynamic efficiency, should all be irrelevant. And if the engine is burning clean enough to be legal, particulates and HCxs should be almost irrelevant, as they should account for only a tiny fraction of the carbon throughput.
conservation of mass would suggest a balance which would also suggest that a ratio of actions would be consistant. i personally (once again the disclaimer!!) dont think the exhaust is static even in a car that goes the extra mile to insure cleaner exhaust....(keep in mind that its the honda's in the article and not the Pri's) now a couple of assumptions (iow, trying to understand why the author provided some unverified, unexplained and seemingly senseless statement) 1) he proofreads his own stuff. 2) the sentence flowed well and he decided it was better to lie than to alter the snergy of the sentence. 3) or he was trying to impress upon the efficiency of guided travel verses the nether region of the human psyche to determine its own best route in life then again, maybe we should just get an automotive engineer to chime in on this. (that i could have missed)
Re: contacting NavTek regarding spelling errors on Road To use the COMPASS setting, you enter DEST and then hit COORDINATES. You need to know those to enter. Enter them and you will be directed to the coordinates you have entered. Also on the screen setup, you can have single mode, dual mode, compass mode...select away!
