I consider myself a good driver and semi-hypermiler but every once in a while I bring out my bad self and race random strangers in my Prius. The other day I raced a mercedes convertible on a 2 lane street. Before it started, I was in the left hand lane ahead of the guy. He changed lanes to try to get ahead of me but we both ended up stopped at a red light. So when it turns green we both gunned it. I was nearly giving everything I had. It was tied until I noticed another red light coming up, so I let up. I met him at the light again, but didn't race that time. He sped up to get ahead of me and back into my lane, then he immediately turned left. I guess all along he was just trying to get into my lane to turn left. And here I was trying to race him. LOL.
I once beat the neighborhood stray dog down the road, he still got pee on my tire at the stop sign though.
After years and year of street racing I have to say I do not condone the activity nor should it be posted about on a forum like PC. /turn of opinion mode. I have raced a Scion xB at Sacramento Raceway. I raced him about 6 times and beat him every time. We compared slips and a couple times he had a better reaction time than I did since I was fooling with trying to better my 60' time. When two cars are similar in performance, the difference in reaction time can make or break a race for you so it's not always about which car was faster, it's about how started first. Luckily I never cut a really bad light since the races were generally very close.
I've raced and won garbage trucks and the like. Once in a while I'll drive my wife's Volvo S40 2.4 liter instead of the prius. Feels like an M3
I haven't had the chance to bring the Prius down to my local track (Autobahn country club in Joliet, IL). However, there are often lots of guys who are like "look at me, I'm driving a [porsche/AMG/whatever]!" and never really learn to drive. I usually run rings around them at the track. I also do not condone street racing. Still want to street race? I recommend the following:
No but occasionally I like to surprise 'noise' machines. This summer there was a Harley making a racket and weaving through traffic. But we were at a red light so I just held the brake and floored the accelerator. The Prius sewing machine engine went "pocketa, pocketa, pocketa" and the Harley rider just though the idle was little fast ... until the light changed and released the brake. <GRINS> Yes, he caught me just as I was setting the cruise control for the 50 mph road. He did zoom past and ... no cop this time. <grins> Bob Wilson
Well I beat the pants off one of these.. well, maybe it was this one... She put up a good run, she didn't stand a chance!!!
I beat a lot of riced out cars but only as fast as the speed limit. I've also been beaten once or twice.

My next door neighbor has one of those mountain bicycles with a ton of gears and I am ashamed to say that he beat me to the corner. But, I regularly beat pedestrians down the street.
A granny up the street. no. the prius can hang for about 4 seconds in a race lol, after that though...if they have any sort of power under the hood. Forget about it if you want to race, purchase a car suitable for that, the prius is a grocery getter.
Actually, my wife's Impala is a better racer AND a better grocery-getter (absolutely HUGE trunk!). But it only gets 25 MPG.
I'll start off by saying that I don't race my Prius, but have to also state that I tend to get aggravated when I hear people talking about how 'slow' Prius' are. I know they aren't built as race cars, but they aren't 'slow' by any means. I feel they more than keep up with the average car on the road and never once have I ever had someone 'on my tail' pulling away from a stop light. I think the Prius is pretty respectable and can hold it's own. And trust me, this is coming from a guy that has a 505HP Corvette Z06! :focus:
Well, I recently got an donkey in an Audi. He passed me pretty dangerously in the city (I was right on the legal limit) and raced towards the red light in front of us. I coasted towards the light in the other lane (the road just forked into a two-lane road right in front of that light) and got to the light exactly at the moment when it turned green. I still went some 40km/h (25MPH) at the moment, while the other guy stand still (I didn't brake because I anticipated the light to turn green). So I overtook him and changed to his lane well in front of him . He was mad and immediately floored it and overtook me back again with his tires squeaking, backing into my lane right in front of me and accelerating to the distance. I let him go and just grinned in amusement .
