Washington, D.C. – Teamsters General President James P. Hoffa and United Auto Workers (UAW) Vice President Bob King joined representatives from labour, environmental and consumer groups outside the Embassy of Japan in Washington today to call on the Japanese government to hold Toyota accountable for American job losses when it closes its New United Motors Manufacturing (NUMMI) assembly plant in Fremont, California, and job losses in the carhaul industry. The closure of the NUMMI assembly plant in California will mean a loss of up to 50,000 jobs at NUMMI and its suppliers and other supporting businesses, while 5,000 middle class jobs in the carhaul industry are at stake. Full Article wow.. there's so much crap in that article, where do I start? How about blame GM for leaving Toyota hanging in the NUMMI deal? If GM actually paid for their share, Toyota may not have had to carry the entire load of the NUMMI plant on its own. Toyota, just like every other company out there, is feeling the effects of the economy so naturally if they can't support it, they have to close it (and it's a hard choice esp. since it produces the Corolla and Matrix/Vibe for American consumption). It's gonna put a strain on the Cambridge, Ontario plant and the Japanese plant for Corolla and Matrix production.
This thread should be delated, because it is all BS, thing these union leaders have to say No different then the politial parties in Canada or US Say the party line IT ALL BS I say
I think they should thank Toyota for joining the partnership to reopen that plant after GM closed it in the 70's.
