looking at prius and want to clarify something, i am looking at 07 and 08, all the prius have the 7 year 100,000 mile hybrid warranty for trans, drivetrain right? so as long i have the individual owner transfer this to me- guessing a dealer would do this- i will be covered on the main hybrid stuff to 100,000 or 150,000 on batteries if i am in a carb state? i would rather deal with an individual to avoid sales tax, etc i am going to have a toyota dealer check it out if i buy from individual, but wanted to make sure all i had to do was transfer the warranty i just thought they all came with that 7 year/100,000 regardless and does toyota offer an extended warranty to 150,000 or 200,000? i plan on putting a lot of miles on this car thank you
How can buying from an individual cause you to avoid sales tax? Most states you have to pay the sales tax when you get the licesnse plates.
hmm, maybe you are right, i dont remember paying sales tax on my truck, i dont think you pay city sales tax, you may pay state also if you buy from an individual you may can fudge that a little bit on what the price was, not so from a dealer from what i am seeing the dealers are about 3-5 grand higher than any listed private party and they all list fees, etc, etc at the end in fine print, that is all stuff i avoid with a private party sale
I think the maximum extended warranty is 8yr/125K. I think the drive train is 5 yr 60K. Battery is 8 yr /100K. I dont think there is a 4-5K difference between dealer and private sale. Autotrader online lets your search private/dealer/CPOin your area.
i was under the impression the batteries and trans on these cars was 7 or 8 year and 100,000 miles standard warranty, if this is wrong i need to know i thought i was going to be covered at least a couple of years on the trans/battery and whatever other strange things are in these cars, i appreciate all the info on this i did not do a separate search on auto trader like that, good idea, but so far most of the dealer stuff i see 2008 touring or not are 18,000-21,000 and private party seems to be more in the 15,000-18,000 range phoenix seems to be a little higher than tucson, but not as many in tucson to see the smaller towns seem to be quite a bit less california seems to have better prices than phoenix too but that would make sense to me, there is a pretty big difference usually on kbb between private party price and dealer retail, if they are listing close to retail at the dealers then i would think 3000-5000 is probably right, havent seen one yet that i wanted at a dealer so have not tried to get the price down any, maybe they price them high and negotiate down a good bit, i usually buy private party and so am not sure how much you can usually get the dealers to come down thanks for all this info
Powertrain warranty is 5/60. Hybrid is 10/150 (in CARB states). The extended warranty can be bought as long as the car is within 3 years/36000 miles. Doesn't matter if the car is bought from a dealer or private party. In NJ you'll pay sales tax at the dealer or the DMV when you title the car. Report a purchase price too far below market & the state will impute a sales tax & send a bill.
For the 8yr/100k hybrid warranty, if you were to buy a used prius from a CARB state which has a 10yr/150k warranty and you registered the car in a non-CARB state, does it downgrade back to the 8yr/100k? BTW, regarding the taxes, cvincent and JimN is absolutely right. when you register your car / motor vehicle at the DMV, they will ask you and tax you on how much you paid for the car. Too little and you get a bill. On the other hand, I saw a guy argue that they did pay 8k for a 18k car. Not sure if he did or didn't. I was sitting in the DMV line. The guy said, "If the DMV really feels that it's worth 18k, please buy it from me for 18k + tax and it's yours." No problems after that.
Yes, if the vehicle is registered outside a CARB state then the warranty would default down to 8 yrs/100K. Your DMV story is great!
The sales tax here is calculated from some blue book-like value that's in the Ministry of Transport's computer....but it turns out that's only if you buy it in province. If you buy it out of province, they use the actual invoice. When I bought my sister's 88 Corolla from her back in 2002 I paid her $1 (she had inherited a car and didn't think it was worth enough to bother selling, so gave it to me). I had to go to Winnipeg to get it, then, since I was going to drive back through the US, we did the $1 bill of sale thing in case I needed that at the border (yes, I gave her the coin). When I got back home and went to get Ontario plates I had to pay $0.15 in PST and GST for the sale. My son's still driving the 88 Corolla.
The Precept was GM's version of a hybrid built as part of the Supercar program. Toyota wanted to participate but was told "US companies only". They were worried enough that something would come of this they started their own program. The Big 3 used their political muscle to kill the program after each built 1 car & the Federal government built 2. Toyota put theirs on the market. A search for Supercar should find Tony's thread with a link to a history of the program.
thanks for the reply. you know, we should tell the CARB states that if we buy a non-carb state prius and register in a CARB state, we should get a "FREE" upgrade in the warranty. we are rewarded with a "free" downgrade, why no "upgrade." It's all fair!
