There are a lot of stories saying he filed bankruptcy, has $700-800,000 in debt and was 5 months behind on his Prius payments (meaning car was up for repo at that point). If he filed bankruptcy, doesn't that mean his $700K debt is now cleared and doesn't have to repay it? His lawyer denies Sikes is behind in the Prius payments. What is the true state of his finances?
I am more curious where the sources of this information originated. It seems to me the guy's finances don't really have a bearing on how his car runs.
Not at all. It does, however, have a bearing on motive. Just as a big insurance policy doesn't prove that someone killed their spouse, it does cast suspicion. Tom

It has plenty to do with likelihood for false claims. Even without suing Toyota, if people were sympathetic to a believable story, he could use the publicity to make cash from a spike in business for his real estate business and donations towards getting a new car. Some other car company might donate him a new car just for the publicity of it. If he was heavily in debt, he might be looking for a way to get his Prius bought back from Toyota rather than having it repoed.

I suspect it has more to do with motive. Sikes has established "evidence" that would enable him to join in a class-action suit against Toyota.
I wonder if Sikes ever got paid from the insurance company for the robbery he claimed occurred at his residence. I understand he had $24k in cash and the remainder was tangible goods. The guy is a CROOK!!!!! I hope he goes to San Quentin and shares a cell with Scot Peterson. Oh wait... that's death row... guess they wouldn't shack him up with that guy.
Some companies do credit checks on their prospective employees, yet one can argue their finances have no bearing on their job performance.
