Legal site discusses the types of lawsuits against Toyota, and includes a link to a chart of all the cases filed so far -- which takes a four-page PDF file to present. Suing Toyota
I think Toyota will recall their lawyers next few days, have their brains reprogrammed...and beware!! If U can't stop a Toyota vehicle, don't stay in front of a Toyota lawyer.
And enough "something for nothing" Americans that will jump in bed with them and give them something to take to court !!
It would be interesting to know what Toyota's legal staff costs them each year. What part of the new car cost is for Toyota's defense team? Are Toyota owners suing themselves? I suppose it's okay as long and you receive a good portion of the cost of your car to settle your complaint. In any event, the lawyers should be able to retire early.
I was told that some big names are involved in some of these lawsuits, including attorneys who had argued some of the old anti-tobacco cases.
I'm sure Toyota's counsel is similar to most other multinational corporation's counsel. The big company I work for, for example has maybe 100-300 on staff over the past decade. But for sudden influx/litigation matters ... typically the big boys will outsource. THAT's where bigger costs are. House counsel jobs aint that great (pay-wise), and turn on what state they're primarily working out of.
What's most annoying, is that the legal costs incurred in america will be passed on to consumers all over the planet!
If any Toyota attorneys care to contact me .... I will be a witness for the defense. My Prius has been an absolutely wonderful vehicle, to the extent that Monday I leave on an extended trip in it ... with absolute full confidence. You know what they say: "99% of the attorneys give all the others a bad reputation."
Listen, my brother is a defense lawyer. He's not evil, he's not an opportunist nor an ambulance chaser. Yes, the legal system is full of flaws. It's as flawed as humanity itself. And lot's of lawsuits are ridiculous and wasteful. But the stereotype that has been IMO implanted by corporations, that all lawyers are bad..evil or sharks...is damaging to people. Sometimes you need to sue. Sometimes a good lawyer is your best friend. But we've been TOLD that Lawyers are bad. It's been inplanted in our conciousness that suing companies is "bad" and that only greedy opportunists are doing it for profit and gain. That's not the case. Lawyers are individuals, cases are unique. I'm just a little thin skinned when people jump on the all lawyers are bad...never sue a company- bandwagon stereotype. The freedom, the possibilty of suing companies for wrong doing and gaining reward is a huge factor in keeping companies as honest as possible. Trust me, a big corporation has lawyers working for them...but somehow "we the people" are suppose to mistrust and shun lawyers as all being crooked or shady... I think every case needs to be judged in entirety. But the blanket idea that suing is bad, and lawyers are bad...is in my opinion harmful and wrong.
I think everyone knows that deep down. Attorneys (of which I am an inactive one) are like guns ... they do good or nothing or bad, turning on who wields them.
Oh I agree, but I don't really know if everyone believes that. I tend to be a little paranoid, but I think that there has been a very careful and purpose driven campaign to implant the idea in the public conciousness that suing companies is bad, and that lawyers are the evil agents of this horrendous act. Look at this thread, and how quick people are to proclaim lawyers bottom feeders. There have been ridiculous cases, but they have been used by corporations as propaganda to get people to believe ALL CASES are unfounded or ridiculous and in some cases to motivate for legal changes making corporations more immune to prosecution...which IMO is very dangerous. I want the right to sue corporations. The fear of big financial loss, should be a weapon the people have in dealing with corporations. But tell people that they shouldn't sue, and all cases brought against corporations are ridiculous and unfounded and raising costs for everyone...thus we should put liability caps on the "poor" corporations that are just trying to do business....is dangerous...and this idea has been inplanted masterfully in the public psyche. I'd hope you are correct and most people don't believe this, but I fear you are wrong. Unfortunately we live in a very easily manipulated age, and most people believe what they are told.
I think most of us realize that not all lawyers are scum sucking bottom feeders. As pointed out above, it's only the rotten 99% that give the rest of them a bad name. Sorry, I couldn't resist. On the other hand, if you stand up to defend lawyers, expect to get hit. Tom
Oh, I don't use emoticons or smilies but (sigh, roll eyes upwards). You guys are hopeless. Don't make me get my scum bucket lawyer brother to bring a class action lawsuit against you for not being lawyer friendly.... Of course I'm just kidding...but really? I know I'm not going to change your mind...but next time you hear about how a Big Corporation is being raped by a sleazy lawyer...just think a little bit about how that might be being spun by the corporation. Just give a hint of consideration that Lawyers are just tools and often are advocates for corporations and people defendants and prosecution alike. Then you can go back to hating lawyers and making lawyer jokes.
