..recently went in for 15k svc and was told no oil change was required. looked in the maintenance manual and sure enough it states no oil change required unless under special conditions. that said, i've been reading elsewhere that it is recommeded that oil changes occur every 15k/6mos and especially to use high-grade, synthetic oil. any thoughts on this?
ok, i'll be the first to say it... "not another oil thread". Synthetic oil, probably 5000-7500 miles depending on driving style. Toyota used to say 5000 miles, dealer says 10,000 miles.
What I like best about the new Prius 10K oil change interval is that I can change my oil anytime between 5K and 10K and be confident that I am within the Toyota warranty requirement. We are presently driving the Prius about 15K per year which means that I will probably change the oil twice per year around 7,500 miles with Mobil 1 0W20 and have some flexibility as to when I do it. Also, when the oil maintenance warning comes on at 4,500 miles, I reset it (without changing the oil) so it will come on again at 9,000 miles. This insures that I am reminded to change the oil well before the outside 10K limit. This is a good thing. Thanks Toyota.
Just joined the forum. I just purchased a 2010 and previously had a 2005 Prius on which I put nearly 100K miles on it. Loved it and it averaged a hair over 50mpg average until everything here switched to Ethanol. That droppped my mpg about 10%. Now am trying to learn all the new stuff on the 2010. I planned on changing oil around 7500 miles and using only Mobil One. That oil served me very well on the previous Prius. To get better mileage, I put in 3.5 qts only as the concensus on this site recommended. It also had a hair better mpg that way and the oil looked good and everything was fine. Now I am wondering if I should do the same on the 2010.
Welcome! You will need at least 4qts this time. Dry fill is 4.4 I believe. I put 4 in last fill and that brought it up to 1/2 way on the dipstick. Enjoy!
