IKEA to phase out traditional incandescent light bulbs, and that's just the beginning

Not if they're simply installed remotely and either piped in with fiber optic or a reflective tunnel. The OUTSIDE of an oven isn't all that hot.... and that's just an inch or two away from the inside. It really isn't that hard, folks.

Frost? A concern for an LED? Not at all.

    Uh... yes. See above.

And just how are you going to fit a LED bulb into a regular oven where the current bulb sits in the heating compartment?

You're talking about completely redesigned lighting for an oven when we are talking about retrofitting LED bulbs into existing appliances.

    Hi drees,

You seem to not ever had the experience of living through winter in a place where the typical high temperature is about 5F, and it does not get light till 10 am, and then gets dark at 3pm.

i've got a boatload of incandescents stored away. i use my lights judiciously, and probably use less electricity than most people with flourescents. i hate them and refuse to put them where i read and work. except my basement, garage and shop.

You might be talking about a retrofit, but the rest of us are talking about a new design. Retrofitted lighting is generally a bad idea, and usually ends up sub-optimal. In some cases it's okay, but not in general, and certainly not for special applications such as oven bulbs.

Rather than arguing about the use of an incandescent appliance bulb inside an oven (mine is used about 10 minutes a year), how about discussing changing out the lighting that's used a LOT?

We've put LEDs as under cabinet lighting in the kitchen, to cut down on turning on the big fluorescent fixtures when we need a glass of water in the middle of the night. I think I could just leave them on, 24/7, and use less power than turning the big lights (4ft, two tubes) on a couple of times.

I'm trying to think if there is an incandescent bulb left anywhere in the house. Hmm, I think the last holdout was the back porch light, and I'm pretty sure that one was changed out for a fluorescent last year. The front porch lights were swapped out at least a year ago with LED floodlights on a motion sensor. That's been working fabulously for us.

Our IR sauna came with LED lights installed in it. Granted, the temperature up at the light fixtures probably never exceeds 125-145F, but the heat hasn't bothered them yet.

This might sound a tad minimalist, but I find a little camping headlamp very useful around the house. It's not much light, but it's easy to put exactly where I need it, and I still have my hands free. It's plenty bright enough for taking the garbage out at night, finding my way to the bathroom without ruining my night vision (it's got a flipup red cover), and even reading in bed.

I've done many many things in bed, but have NEVER tried reading in bed

There is a tiny light that comes on when I get a glass of water out of the fridge door, there is the oven light, and two weird halogen lights in the vent hood over the range. I think I have two dimmable floods in the living room that are never on and a 3 way in one bed room where a 'curly fries' bulb won't fit. My motion lights outside won't come on with two CFL floods (relay does not latch, due to lack of wattage) so my outside floods are 50% CFL and 50% Halogen. The other 78 lights in my house are florescent.

I've had LED light bulb in my fridge for a few years now. I was tired of getting blinded at 3am when I'd get a drink. There were 2 bulbs, but the base was poorly connected to the bulb part and I just gave up on it.

I've used CFL's for at least 5 years now, without any issues. Every light, except the dining room chandelier and oven currently use CFL / round fluorescent / etc. The only reason the dining room doesn't, is that it's hooked up to a dimmer and I've said for the past 3 years I planned to replace it. I just haven't found anything I want to replace it with!

I will say, that I've found IKEA to sell some of the better quality CFL bulbs as opposed to the cheap stuff at other stores. I'm still using several of their bulbs that I got 5 years ago. Of course, I prefer to just use natural sunlight to see what I'm doing in the house. Actual bulbs are rarely turned on in my house.

Where were we talking only about retrofits? I was answering how LEDs could ever work in the fridge and ovens, etc. For the record - retrofitting LEDs into incandescent fixtures SUCKs. And I rarely recommend it.

Ah. Oops. Tom beat me as usual... What he said.
