this is my first prius (2010) and I need my first oil change and some body work (I scratched my left side when parking...) Do I need to bring it back to the dealership for oil change and body work? Can this be done with other mechanics? (primary reason is that the dealership is costly and may not do a better job than others) I live in Markham / Toronto, Canada area... If there's any respectable Prius capable mechanics, I would really love to hear. Thanks! Charles
You can get any maintenance/repair work done anywhere you choose (other than warranty work and recalls, obviously).
:welcome: What stream said + if you get work done other than by a Toyota dealer be sure your receipt identifies what parts and materials were used. For instance, it should identify the oil brand and type, not just the viscosity. In the unlikely chance that you have a warranty dispute later, you may need to prove that you used the correct spec lubricants and othermaterials. Obviously something like paint repair your don't need to be concerned, but oil, filters, coolant, etc you should use materials that meet the right specs and have receipts that show you did. By requiring that information in writing when you get the work done, you also increase the probability that your mechanic will actually use the right stuff.
I went back and read some of your other posts to see if you had an English language problem or a well developed sense of humor.
i would never take a new car to an independent mechanic. Many independent mechanics have no idea how to work a hybrid. An oil change at a toyota dealer will run you about $50-60. Make sure you use 0W-20 oil, and NOTHING ELSE. If you take it to jiffy lube, they probably don't have the right filter, nor the right oil. Our priuses use a special cartridge filter that isn't too common. I just noticed you're in canada, but the same principle applies. The safest thing to do is just take the prius to the dealer. Your savings won't be that great if you take to an independent mechanic to do an oil change. Chances are it'll be his first 2010 prius that he works on.
I'll second that! Oh and make sure they don't over fill it - not even by a tiny amount. Don't say I haven't warned you.
