The Toyota dealership I'm dealing with is offering a 40k plan (8 visits/every 5000 miles) for $995. What should I really be paying for that? And are there other (longer or shorter) plans? Thanks!
you need an oil change every 5-10000 miles and tire rotation every 5. naybe an air and cabin filter at 30? how much do their regular prices add upto? i would say around 500. if oil is every 5 and around 300. if it's 10,000.
these maintenance plans are a rip off. Let me break it down for you 5k miles- Tire rotation. thats it. $30 at the most 10k miles- Tire rotation, oil change. $30 + $60 = $90 15k- same as 5k 20k- same as 10k 25k- same as 5k 30k- same as 10k but change air filters so add + $80 35k- same as 5k 40k- same as 10k Total cost: $600 if you follow the service guidelines in the manual. I find it outrageous dealers charge money to "inspect" things like coolant, hinges, brakes...etc. You don't have to worry about your brakes til 100k miles.
Yep, so the first 2 years/24K miles are free, that drops the cost to the customer to about $300 or less over that 4 year/40K mile period. Can you say rip-off?
Frustrating. So the whole thing's a scam. I suppose the extended warranty is the same thing. The offer: 100,000 miles, 8 years, $1800.
The schedule listed above is correct. Here is what I would do. Go to NTB (National Tire and Battery) or a place like it. They offer unlimited tire rotating and balancing for existing tire for $39.95 for the life of the tire. Here is the new schedule 5K Tire Rotation at NTB ($39.95 on time fee) 10K Oil change $60, free tire rotation at NTB 15K Free tire rotation at NTB 20K Oil change $60, free tire rotation at NTB 35K Free tire rotation at NTB 40K Oil change $60, free tire rotation at NTB Total $220 You can save $17 off each oil change if you have Wallmart do it. They charge $6 for each 0W20 Mobil1 quart and they will change the oil for $12.95. New total $169 vrs the $995 the dealer wants. That is a savings of $826 You are correct, this is huge rip off. Toyota makes the most reliable cars in the world. Chances are very good from 0 to 100,000 miles you will have zero repairs. This will save you $1,800. I agree more scams to take your money. Enjoy your new Prius and all the money you will save.
don't forget, 'toyota' and 'toyota dealer' are two entirely different entities. while they may be contractually bound in many ways, dealerships are free to recommend services far beyond the manufacturers recommendations and mfg's may recommend too limited service to be competitive with others. (see your owners manual) for the beadvice, see the many threads here on service and pricing. you have found the right place.
