Just wanted to alert everyone to something that saved me hundreds of dollars: The gasoline gauge on my 2008 Prius stopped working properly, and when I took it in, I was told that the electronic device that sends the fuel level to the display was broken. But the device is not sold separately, you have to buy an ENTIRE new gasoline tank! I was told this would cost $750, because I was a few hundred miles past the 45,000 mile warranty point. So I asked for the service manager, told him I was only a few miles over warranty, and there really is no way a gasoline gauge should EVER break that soon. (BTW, I have a 1996 Celica whose gas gauge works perfectly!). So he told me he would request a "goodwill" warranty repair from Toyota (since Toyota pays dealers when they perform any repair for a car under warranty). The next day, I got a note from him saying Toyota had approved the repair. I only had to pay the labor charge, which was $150. Not ideal, but not $750! If I hadn't asked, I would never have known that a "goodwill" repair existed.
