Hi there, I am a brand new "wanna-be" Prius owner and have a couple of questions. I live in Ontario (Canada) and have been test driving cars and decided I could likely afford a base model 2010 Prius. I went to a dealership yesterday and they have a dealer demo (driven by the manager) that has 9000kms on it and has the premium package. I love the idea of this package and the car seems to be in great shape (I did not drive it because it was in the showroom), but I need a bit of help. The manager wanted to sell it to me for $500 OVER his invoice price, which I think is crazy. He was trying to tell me that this is considered a new car because it has not been registered but as far as I am concerned, 9000kms is NOT new. I left right after this. The store manager called me to follow-up today, I told her that I was very disappointed in the price that was offered and she is calling me back today and "wants to get me in that car". The help I need here is that I am not sure what I can expect to pay (lowest fair price), and also what extra questions I should ask before buying. I was thinking about asking for the extended warranty, on top of getting a good price. Any idea what I should offer? The last person told me he would give it to me for $31,000 OTD but that seems high for what I consider a used vehicle. My other option is to just can this demo idea, and buy a base model brand new. Any help/insight would be amazing! First time car buying sure is stressful but also super exciting! Thanks, Julianna
That kind of crap should be unlawful. It is a used car no two ways about it. They need to come down much more than that. But without knowing Canadian prices structure, I can't tell you how much. On car deals,,, always be willing to walkaway. I know it is tough. Welcome!
Hi Julianna, I bought mine a year ago here in the GTA, full AT package. I paid $1k below list. If they are quoting you $31k including all taxes, fees and everything, you'd be getting about $4k below list. I don't know what the invoice price is. For Ontario I'd say that's a not a bad starting place but I'd suggest you'd be correct in trying to get an ECP thrown in for free. Start with the 84/200k and settle for the 60/16k. Keep in mind this is just my opinion and I'm not an expert by any means. Get lots of opinions before actually committing yourself! Best of Luck Hoffy
For comparison purposes: I am about to pull the trigger on a used Blizzard Pearl/Misty Gray 2010 Prius IV with solar roof package (moonroof/nav) and remote engine start with 7000 miles on it for $25,998 plus tax/title/fees from Carmax here in the states. I think thats a fair price for a used 2010 prius. . .
That car is a--very--used car, regardless of whether it's been registered or not. And I wouldn't touch a "demo" with a 10 foot pole. Who knows how many test drives it's been on, and how much abuse it's endured.
I have owned several Demos and never had a problem with any of them. Most Demo are driven by Managers at that Dealership, and they know they will be sold once they get a certain number of miles on them. it's been my experience tht Demos have been more trouble free than a new car with only 10 miles on it. Think about it, the driver is at the dealership everyday, all day, and he's probably a Manager, so you think if there is a squeak, rattle, shimmy, or other little thing that needs to be fixed, that the service department won't be all over it? I alway ask if there is a Demo available when looking to purchase new. You are still considered the first owner, and normally you can negotiate the warranty start date as your date of purchase. Having said that, I would not give them a dime over Invoice for a Demo due to the miles already on it, and would expect a warranty extension to cover those miles on the back end. I say if the price is right go for it!
Hey my friend, just to help you out a bit here is the Wholesale report invoice price: Wholesale Price for New 2010 Prius in Ontario: Base $26,272.00 (listed Base $27,800.00) Freight $1,420.00 PREMIUM PKG W/SOLAR PANEL $3,221.00 (Listed $3,835.00) So you can see how much above the wholesale price they are charging you. (usually around 3-5%) You still have a $3000 cash incentive from Toyota Canada But you no longer get the $2000 Tax credit in Ontario (after HST in Ontario July 1st) I got my Premium package Blizzard Pearl ($200 extra) for CAD$34500 (include all tax and delivery) - $2750 Cash Incentive - $2000 Tax Rebate = $29750 OTD Brand New
