I am researching on the subject of harmful and cancerous chemicals that are released into the atmosphere, that mess with the DNA structure (of both wild animals and humans) and nature's environmental equilibrium: Gases which are released during the manufacturing process of certain products used in the everyday life of us humans. I have already been pointed in the direction of the novel "Silent Spring" by Rachel Carson, and the REACH project...
1. google scholar: carcinogens release environment 2. read the papers 3. read the forward citations as well (that is, newer papers that have cited the ones you've read) 4. post your summary of them at PriusChat
Maybe off topic, but I am bothered by environmental issues - The EPA / govt. website(s) are filled with documents describing all aspects of climate and global issues, change, etc... I am keenly aware there is a great many people that believe climate change, global warming, Al Gore, etc, etc... is all just a big hoax. I've heard the conservative talk show hosts refute the findings on global warming. So, I'm bothered by what I hear. If climate is getting worse, this in my opinion is one of the biggest issues to deal with, and in that case, we don't need a bunch of naysayers. I'd like to know the proven science from the BS on the subjects.
No. Of course not. I only expressed my concern as a Prius owner. I've watched about 45 minutes of documentary with scientists speaking. I care about what the leading scientists have to say, not the media, politicians and environmental activists. Here's a starter series. It's coming in embedded, so I guess google The Man-made Global Warming Hoax (Part 1) Youtube
Some basics: 1) The science of CO2 increasing in concentration is indisputable. That's a hard measurement made over the decades. 2) CO2 has a greenhouse effect. That is also indisputable. It is a simple physics measurement made in many labs. 3) Climate Changes have been detected, especially in the higher latitudes. This is indisputable over the short term, but what the climate was EXACTLY beyond 50 years ago gets tough. One thing is sure, if you look over a long enough period, the earth has had lots of drastic climate changes. The prevailing assumption is that these changes have been slower than what is happening now, so speed of climate change is a very, very critical factor in today's discussions. 4) The effect of increasing CO2 levels is the major issue. This requires science shifting from the knowns above to the unknowns of predicting the future. Also, some of these model match recent climate effects. Right now, the correlation between the model and recent change is possibly due to correct model, but possibilities remain that it is other factors at play. 5) Predicting the future depends on correct "models" of ALL the possible effects between CO2 increasing driving the resulting climate change. There are a lot of computer models. It's essential that this be done and improved, but the "proof" that a model is right takes decades. 6) Proof that the models are accurate enough to make policy is not subscribed by many. Many feel that drastic policy and economic changes are essential and some feel that they are more destructive than constructive. (Of course you knew this already, so forgive my over simplicity here.) 7) You have to leave behind the "Giant Hoax" theories. Any dedicated effort by someone without bias and with self discipline can find this out. Those recording accurate data and trying to develop good models are working honestly to find the answers. Hopefully, I have not favored one or the other side, but just pointed out where science is solid and where science is still working on the issues.
Long ago, there was much C02 in the atmosphere. Over time, the C02 was sequestered and buried deep beneath the soil. Live evolved on Earth. Now we're taking the C02 out of the earth and putting it back in the atmosphere. You take it from there.
