did a oil change on the 2010 III at 3200 mi. looked dark, don't know if I would go the full 10,000 mi.
7,500 miles has been no big deal with the older models using 5W-30. In fact, there's simply no comparison to my mom's Corolla at just 5,000 miles. Prius is really easy on oil. .
You really can't tell from just looking at it. A used oil analysis (UOA) is the only real way to tell for sure. Sides, the first change should happen early on < 5,000. IMHO.
I have checked mine when it was changed at 5k 10k and 15k and it looked clean to me, it wasn't clear but was no where near black. So i will be doing the 10k oil changes from now on. I used to go 5-7k on my chevy with regular dino oil and it was fine.
kinda surprising, i've gone more than 10,000 miles sometimes on some of my 6 toyotas ( by mistake) and the oil has never looked anything but light yellowish brown.
Search in this forum on "oil change" - there's a lot of experience documented here on oil changes early in 2010 Prius ownership. I've contributed some of it (changes at 1400, 5000 and now 10,000 mi). The oil is doing its job, trapping contaminants, plus with a new engine breaking in, there could be more blow-by past the piston rings. That will diminish as the rings get seated. I just changed my oil and the oil looked reddish and translucent, cleaner than the first & second changes and this after 5000 miles. I put a TRD oil filter in and I'll go for 10,000 miles this time on Mobil 1 0W-20.
Oil filter traps contaminats, oils main job is to lube the engine parts. There is no need for engine breaking in, it was done before you got the car. The only thing you need to do is not to drive it at a constant speed for a prolong length of time, which has been stated in the manual.
It won't go 10,000 miles because its dino oil and its the motor break in oil. Its not special break in oil I just mean its the oil on board for the engines first 4,000 miles. Lots of wear there that it won't see for the rest of its life. But you changed it at the perfect time though. Put a new oem filter and 3.8 quarts of Mobil One 5-30 in there and your good to go for the next 10,000 miles no problem.
What did you use to remove the oil filter cartridge? I tried to use a 65mm wrench, but it slips. Any suggestions? Thanks, Al.
It can and will go 10,000 miles because 2010 priuses are factory filled with Toyota 0W-20, which is a full synthetic oil. Im changing mine though at 1000 miles to get rid of the break in junk and installing a TRD filter too. Then ill cash in on the free maintenance at 10k miles and get an oil change then as well.
I just took my 2010 prius in to the dealer for the first service at 5,000 miles. They rotated the tires but did not change the oil. They even gave me a form stating "customer declines oil change". I did not. They assured me that Toyota recommends the first oil change at 10,000 miles. Tire rotation is every 5,000 miles.
They even gave me a form stating "customer declines oil change". Did you have to sign this? I have 400 mils on mine after 6 months. Time must also be a factor?
I bought the Toyota Special Service Tool (SST) it measures 64mm. Toyota P/N: 09228-06500-02, It listed for $99.92 got it for $84.93, it is made of steel and fits snug on the filter housing. As mentioned by others check out the other oil change threads, lots of info. there.
