From Edmunds' Awards which leads to 2011 Best Retained Value Awards. Prius, not surprisingly won the hybrid category. If you look at the data file at the bottom, the 2011 Prius did pretty well when compared to the highest ranked sedans.
Yes, but according to their TCO calculations, they predict that the $2600 extra depreciation of the Prius II will be more than offset by the $3700 saved in fuel versus the LX automatic, and it looks like they are assuming less than $3/gallon for gas.
Prius retrained 49.7% and Accord retained 48.2% of the value. 25 MPG accord will use twice as much fuel as 50 MPG Prius to operate.
Interesting how each category's winners are about 50% depreciation. Did Edmunds say how old the car is when they assign value ? As an aside, I always think of the depreciation percentage as half the story. I multiply by the purchase cost to know how much money was spent.
It's five years per Edmunds' Awards. That's why I mentioned it in my post since 2011 Best Retained Value Awards says nothing about age.
