In the process of buying a rental property. The former owners were suspected growers. In the garage there are 6 6 inch holes drilled into the wall. Does anyone know if these are typical ventilation features in a grow home. Oh they also used a sealant to seal the bottom of the garage door.

I would say yes they were. In Canada once a house is confirmed as a grow house it is black marked. Just like meth labs and major structural issues.

If it was a grow house but not official yet, I would drop the issue and offer a lowball offer. I am not sure if the same laws apply in the states though.

As for the holes and sealant, that sounds like it was. I recommend watching the first bit of a Mike Holmes episode where the renters used it as a grow house. He explains some of the things they did and why, how to fix it, and why it is no good. Usually between the opening credits and the first commercial is where that type of info comes from in his show.

If it was just the garage and not the house, you're probably safe. Still, it's a good reason to bid lower. If you thoroughly vacuum, wash, and paint the garage (while wearing a mask) you should eliminate any mould problem.

Any chance you can put it back into operation? That should help pay the mortgage.

Indoor pot growers are actually going to save the world loads of energy by developing indoor growing technologies and techniques. LED grow lighting will be the next green revolution. The cost of shipping food to short day cold temp areas from long day warm temp areas goes up with the cost of oil. By extending the day in green houses with supplemental high efficiency lighting, food can be grown locally. Who would have thought that weed growers would have developed the technologies and techniques that may ultimately allow everyone to grow their own food year round?

and possibly increase yields too. That's an interesting take. We'll see what comes of it...

I hadn't thought of it that way. If increased yields in small enclosed spaces are the future of food production, then I'd say that problem's already solved. :)
