Did anyone else see the AP piece in their paper 5\4/11 on the subject of rising sea levels? It seems the report to be issued in Greenland next week concludes that sea levels are rising faster than previously predicted, and indeed are subject o basic feed back mechanisms. So, is anyone out there surprised that the predictions of the climate scientists are once again confirmed, (as opposed to those who wish to click their heals!)? And once again, by compromising their best guesses, to make sure not to leave the doubters any avenue for criticism, they have underestimated the extent of the issue.
When the other planets' temperature trends begin to steadily and statistically significantly diverge from our trend, I'll worry about it.
Somebody just needs to go to that silly ol' ice and explain to it that Climate Change is a hoax. That will stop it from melting.
Hey I thought I saw that inconvient movie was predicting 20 rise in sea levels. There were lots of scary fake estimates. If you are refering to IPCC underestimating, I take most of their predictions with a huge grain of salt. I still think church's estimate of 0.5 meter or less is the likely scenario.. Remember these news reports are statistical. One will say omg its rising really fast, then the next says its not rising at all. Let's wait until we get a 0.1 meter rise before we think that the 0.59 prediction was way underestimated.
Denialists prefer a strident tone. I suggest we send them all to the artic so that they can scream in unison at the ice: STOP MELTING! They can return as soon as they get results.
Are people not aware of global warming? I thought the argument was whether this is normal temperature change or a man made issue. Hmmmmmm.
actually more then few insist "there is no global warming". many of them also insist that there is no evolution and Darwin must be dug out and burned at stake.
Personally, I don't care. IF the temperatures are increasing, climates will shift around the globe. ice will melt, waters will rise, temperate zones will become barren and rain forests will dry up. Tundras will melt and, potentially, oceanic currents will stop. When these things happen, people will be too busy trying to figure out where to move and how to live to worry about how it got that bad.
maybe you should; read about Permian extinction. When the oceanic currents stopped ocean bottom warmed up above 18C (Methane clathrate melting point) and caused massive Methane belch on a planetary scale. Since methane is ~90 times more potent green gas then CO2, it resulted in another warming/die out, with ~96% of all sea life and 70% terrestrial life extinct. For comparison Cretaceous–Tertiary event which killed dinosaurs killed only ~40%.
actually it depends if you go by volume or weight, and other factors. [ame=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Methane]Methane - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia[/ame] With respect to Permian–Triassic extinction event there is still disagreement but it was a 3-stage chain event, which started with impact in Australia. Impact caused the Siberian Traps eruption, biggest in the history of the planet. Eruption caused global warming. It took ~100-200,000 years but it heated up planet by 5C, melted ice caps and stopped oceanic currents. ~10% of terrestrial life died out in process. Methane belch was a last straw, result of warming caused by eruption. When it happened, temps jumped another 5C and majority of life died out in 8-12,000 years.
The question is not whether to worry or not, but rather are you willing to do something to bend the curve? It seems we all fall into one of threes camp. Those that deny AGW no matter the evidence, those that accept the science and try to work diligently in their own life's to effect change, and this that think it all too late. I am a mix of the latter an the middle. Changing behavior and effecting change comes at little or no cost, and in fact it can pay, but I am under little illusion that my actions are enough. Icarus
actually there weren't any intent to be humorous. It was not by any means a sarcastic or sardonic remark; there are some things we humans should do while we have time.
the question becomes what can you do, besides driving Prius? The other factor is whatever critical impact may be, it will not happen for millennia. Sort term changes are inconveniences at worse, and there are some positive effects of warming up and ice melting.. for example prime beach property on Georgian Bay, North-West passage, etc.
