I don't know if the volt is obsolete just yet but when the plug in and family of prii arrive in 2012, the volt is dead unless government motors does a one up on toyota.

the Volt is not obsolete, it just has a much smaller niche to fill than the Prius plug in or 100% highway capable EVs. i think GM needs to get national distribution out there ASAP

    This.
That niche is paper thin, no doubt. The Volt is dubious now, when the pHV comes out it's going to be hacked out at the knees unless either the plug-in prius comes out absurdly expensive (more than any reasonable current projection) OR GM pulls a rabbit out of their hat and cuts its price by $8k. Otherwise, forget it.

Already its sales are poor enough that we can rightfully conclude that it's off to a very underwhelming start.

Toyota once again seems to have better evaluated the market and provided a more economical alternative.

i read up to page 6, but my take on it is that I won't ever consider a volt unless it gives me the 40 miles on electric, 50 mpg thereafter, and a price under 30K. If those conditions aren't met, what's my motivation? If they would do this, they could crush the leaf I think, because of range anxiety. I want a car that is going to be at the top mpg of the hybrid world with some electric only capability that is priced reasonably.

I wonder if the Volt will go the way of the EV1.

That pretty much sums up the Prius PHV.

exactly. i would consider the prius phv over the volt any day. it's more economical and frankly bigger. i don't fit as well in the volt, let alone the stuff i have to carry sometimes.

"Impractical" would be my choice of word to describe the Volt.

GM just can't stand the thought of blending electric and gas power, using both most efficiently as needed. Their approach seems to be backfiring.
