It's been on my TiVo for awhile but I've had no time to watch yet. I'm no BMW fan but it looks like it was insightful and interesting. It'll be rerun at least 2x in the next 2 weeks. Clip at BMW: A Driving Obsession - CNBC. More info at News Headlines, News Headlines and CNBC'S "BMW: A DRIVING OBSESSION" WILL PREMIERE ON JULY 13TH.
The big problems with German cars is they are not that reliable and they are very expensive to repair--especially Porsches and BMWs. You need a good private repair shop for these cars. Avoid the dealers. I know. I have had both.
Yeah it is a problem. I have known a couple of BMW owners and they sure do seem to like their cars. The only one I drove was probably a 2003 325 or something with an auto, I found it slow and boring/underwhelming. I know many if not most of them now are pretty darn nice. I'd consider owning one but only while under lease so I wouldn't have to worry about any issues with it.
To go off at a tangent here - the diesel BMW's have some of the best diesel engines around. They go like stink (as a BMW should) yet return market leading mpg's and also have the latest DPF's. Shame you don't get them in the US as these really are how diesel cars should be! And you all know my views on diesel cars. If I was to get something other than a Prius then the BMW 320D SW has my name on it.
Hence the joke Behold, My Wallet or Big Money Waster. Years ago, a former coworker of my ditched his Porsche Boxster in favor of Nissan 350Z because the maintenance costs were killer. He didn't have any trouble w/his car but just the routine maintenance and replacement of wear items was very expensive. BMW reliability is very hit or miss, depending on the year and model. The 325 is your problem. Engine was pretty weak in that generation of anything less than a 330i. Yeah, agreed it'd be pretty underwhelming given its high price.
Yep. BMW has some fast cars but you pay through the nose for them, and their entry line cars are by no class market leaders at the lights
I think the older Audi's also fall in this class. I had a '84 Audi 4000s Quattro. God, I loved that car, after 9 years, I finally had to get rid of it due to the god awful costs in maintaining it. That's when I fell in love with my 4Runner......still have the ole girl. That's another story however!
