True costs of gasoline

    there is tax collected on electricity, but it is not a transportation tax.

    fuel tax is supposed to cover highway upkeeping but it no longer does (blame shift from trucks to higher MPG cars) since 2008 $4/gal spike. Before that it did cover highway construction costs but would not cover other costs (FHA, EPA certification, etc etc etc).

    If you attacking Dave for not paying his fair share of costs, blame yourself as the amount of fuel tax collected on gas you put in your Prius does not proportionally cover your use of infrastructure. The guy in Hammer next to you pays your share. :welcome:

    The proportional idea is valid for the Hummer driver, too. They pay more gas tax, but they require an even greater subsidy. So no, he's not paying the Prius's share.

    The federal gas tax should have been raised long ago.
    It's almost as the government has used are consumer credit card ideology " spend now figure out some way to pay later" what they didn't plan on it was huge rise in gas prices lowering demand and further deepening the holding it already dug by not raising prices to keep up with inflation

    No we have a infra structure that is failing in most areas what will be the cost of liability claims for another minnesota bridge like disaster?

    Agree 100%, but do you remember what happened Clinton's BTU tax? Ross Perot 50 cent/gal tax proposal to pay off national debt?

    Both sound like really good ideas, looking 20 years back

    ya, what we failed to realize is that a bit of sacrifice so many years ago would have us in a very stable and secure position now.

    makes me wonder what would have happened if Carter had been elected to another term and had the chance to let his energy policy work a bit. but the problems we face are the exact problems he faced.

    great ideas, great future, but no support and too far ahead of his time.

    he saw what we are seeing now and was able to do it decades in advance.

    we constantly have chances to effect the change, but we always fail because we dont get the governmental support. I have to think that this will be different

    1) the situation is much more dire and "in your face"

    2) we have a very large corporate entity; Nissan that is all in.

    3) we do have token governmental support...ya thats right, token. a few hundred million is nothing more than token support in a budget where most allocations are in the billions but its a start and hopefully that will be enough to gain the groundswell of support we need.

    Toyota pulled it off with the Prius, we need to take it another step.

    And clearly vice versa. Government doesn't get OUR support. All Carter needed to be re-elected was votes from us.

    Yes, it's the classic short term needs trump all problem, but the human brain is wired for that. That made sense 10K yrs ago. unfortunately, brain bugs will continue to haunt us for some time. the only real solution to them is education and training... and we all know the state of education in this country....
