I started my Prius journey about 3-4 weeks ago. I was getting about 52.2 MPG on stock tire pressure and my "old" driving habit. This was about high 40's going to work and mid 50's going back home. This was a total of almost 100 miles roundtrip (Norwalk, CA to Fontana, CA) driving mostly on I-10 and I-605. After reading the wealth of information on this forum, I was able to improve my driving pattern considerably. In my fourth week of the Prius journey, I increased tire pressure to 42/40, practiced my pulse and glide, timed traffic lights, and became more aware of the road. All these translated to high 50's going to work and low 70's going back! I am averaging about low to mid 60's on this tank! I plan to squeeze some more MPG when I get my Ultra-Gauge and OBD/USB so I can try the PriiDash software. Hopefully one of these can add to my efficiency. So thank you once again to everyone! Keep up the great work and drive safe!
wow it is pretty impressive on GenII, congrats. A couple more places to squeeze extra MPG: LRR tires and oil. We got ~2-4MPG improvement with Michelin Energy Saver, and ~1-2 on Castrol Edge titanium comparing to M1. Also under-filling by 4-8oz helps good luck
Thank you! I still have threads on my current tires, but am really looking into LRR tires when I need to replace tires. By under-filling, do you mean the oil?
Not much! About 15-20 minutes going to work and 10-15 minutes going back. I don't mind this at all. I downloaded some audio books and am enjoying the added peace and quiet!
Yes - congrats - you're making a great start into the nutty world of obsessive compulsive behavior Think how much you'll need a cigarette once you do a whole gas tank full in the 70mpg's: Once you do that ... you'll continue on into the REAL stratosphere ... the 80mpg's ... I've given up trying to do a whole tank above 80mpg. The reason is, you start out doing well - then 'she-who-must-be-obeyed' will want to borrow the car. What are you going to do?!? Admit you're a freak of nature? Are you going to say, "NO! I'm working on a new mileage record!!" See? You know they'll lock you up and throw away the key if you say that. I've tried to hit the magic 80mpg tank full average on a couple occasions . . . . and after averaging over 83mpg for 300+ miles, all it took was ONE lousy trip with a lead foot driver, to mess me up and drive the mpg's down so low, that at the 1/2 fuel tank level, I knew I'd never be able to recover the 80's on this - my best partial tank: Only 86 degrees - and she turned on the air conditioner! You know what they do - they'll threaten to hit the 'reset' if you do this hyper mile'ing thing too much.
Wow i just got mine 2009 and working on tricks like this,,, first day i got 36 second 40 and i guess today i got almost 50 but 30% of the drivers behind me flip me off because i was 36 on a 45 mph road and they thougth i was an old lady. But you know what? WHI CARES i mostly do short trips (8 milles one wat) and i dont know if i will ever reach 60 at least. Congrats
Hahaha! This post made my day! That is some great MPG's you are getting. I assume that you drive mostly on flat roads and off freeway? If not, please share your secret! I hear you about the AC and the threatening to hit "reset" .. there aught to be a way to disable the reset button! haha.. another thing that can resolve our problems is a "user" option.. so if Driver A drives, this will be the MPG, and if driver B drives the car, it will only log his/her MPG.
Congrats on your purchase! As I have said in my reply to one of your post, there is a lot of ways to improve your MPG, most of them are detailed in this site. Short trips like that kill MPG. It doesn't mean you can't get better mileage though. Work hard on it and it will pay off. GLHF in your new car!
