All, I just bought 2011 PriusII. The dealer offered me a 5 year/100K extended warranty for $500. Do I need to buy it? Thanks.

No, if you do decide to buy an extended warranty you can still buy the genuine Toyota extended warranty later on line, usually at a better price than a dealer will offer.

OK Paradox, I see that you have a model five with the advanced tech package. I just purchased one and tend to put a lot of Interstate miles on the car (just love the Dynamic Radar Cruse Control). After the Toyota HID fiasco of a few years ago, I am concerned about excessive repair costs of all this new high tech stuff (and costs associated with the LED headlights). I can't seem to get a solid answer as to coverage of this stuff (particularly the LED headlights, which likely cost a fortune to replace). What is your insight into this aspect of the Platinum warranty?

I am comfortable :) with the proven reliability of the basic Prius (have 143K on our 07) without the extended warranty: it is the new and unproven stuff that is in the Advanced Tech Pkg that concerns me (plus Toyota's penchant for making repairs very expensive ).

I tend to get rid of my vehicles before I need to even consider an extended warranty; I usually trade/sell every 3-4 years. So concerning what is covered under the warranty I am unfamiliar with, I think it would be best to contact the place giving the warranty and ask questions, that's what I would do for specific questions concerning technology found in an Advanced Technology outfitted Prius. I do know you can get the warranty, like the one here at the bottom of Danny's posts found in his signature, right before your original one runs out so you have time to consider it and weigh the options.

I would suggest reading the extended warranty documentation--not taking a salesman or dealer finance guy's word. The covered items and excluded items sections should cover this. If it seems ambiguous regarding a certain item, it's likely excluded.

Don't. They are a waste of money. The warranty seller has certainly considered the high price of HID lamps and all that new high tech stuff and has priced their product to make a profit for themselves, not for you. If you are worried sick about having to shell out to fix something that might break, put $1000 into a bank account to cover it. If you can't afford to do that you certainly can't afford an extended warranty (and maybe not a new car in the first place...)

I did read the document - and didn't go for it. Toyota has several different documents out: those that deal with what IS included do not include anything to do with the Radar system, or with the Lane Assist components. However, the actual document that I would sign has a cover sheet that says that the intent is to cover ALL FACTORY INSTALLED equipment (with the exception, of course, of the specifically excluded components). BUT that cover sheet also points out that the actual coverage will be contained in a document that will be sent AFTER I sign (though I understand that I have 30 days to cancel at no cost). So it's all BS till I get the doc!

ANY document that I have seen carries the exclusion of "Light Bulbs" - does that mean that the LED lamps (and related assemblies) would not be included?

I also sent the following to the Toyota Customer Care:

    This is their (lame) response:

I generally agree. There have been very few times that I bought an extended warranty. I did it twice on cars (both Chrysler products) and both times they more than paid for themselves.

I did not get an extended warranty for my 07 Prius, and after 143K miles, the only payout I have made (other than routine maintenance) is $500 for front wheel bearings. So based on that experience, I would agree with you.

BUT, as I said, there is little track record on this new high tech stuff. So I would see value in the warranty IF that stuff was covered.

    In regards to:
The warranty price seems to be the same for ANY Toyota so the high tech stuff is not priced into the product (perhaps that is why I am questioning it). Also, it is not HID lamps I am concerned about (been there, done that) - it is the LED lamps (there is a BIG difference).
