One thing I've always admired about the motorcycle community is how they all have their ceremonial hand gesture that they share with all oncoming motorcycle brethren. I've only been driving a Prius for a couple months but have found myself in a few awkward situations where I'm at a stoplight or intersection and look eye to eye with a fellow Prius driver. My original thought is to at least acknowledge them with a 'nod' but not sure if there is Prius etiquette that explains how this situation should be handled...
As a m/c rider (AND - I don't want to "tick off" any H-D riders on here) BUT, that gesture is predominantly done by H-D (Harley Davidson) drivers to OTHER H-D drivers. Of course there are SOME H-D drivers that do acknowledge other makes of motorcylces and they WILL do the "wave" to them. Just sayin' I certainly don't see anything wrong with that.
A Nod doesn't really work in Texas, because we all Nod to eachother if the other has a sweet ride, Prius or Not....maybe some kind of handshake?
The Corvette and (I believe) Jeep communities share a wave. I wave at other folks in my neighborhood or town with a Prius, but not when out-of-town. Then again, we already get those friendly 1-fingered waves from folks in pickup trucks, etc. that somehow feel threatened by our cars.
I waved to other Prius drivers in 2005 and 2006. I would even talk with Gen1 owners and tell them that without their support for the technology I might not have my car. But by the time 2007 rolled around the Prius was less of a novelty and people stopped waving back. So I stopped waving. If we meet eyes, I will give them a nod or slight wave but nothing like the "early days".
Yeah, I come from a Corvette backround where they like to say "Save the wave." Tried it on a couple of fellow Prius drivers and have received some confused facial expressions.:wave::wave:
As an M/C rider, I'll wave to any other M/C rider, unless they are doing something stupid. However, I notice it more of the cruiser/touring riders waving to each other and the sport bikers waving to each other. There's less of a cross-type wave. Jeep owners used to do it religiously, but when I drove my brothers I noticed less and less people waving back.
