I let a friend drive my car for the first time today. Before today I always had a key with a slash through it that blinked until I started the car. Now that has disappeared and the hybrid lock indicator light is on instead. My friend left the car on, by mistake, while she went into the store. She tried repeatedly to lock it, and of course it wouldn't. Did this change something in my indicator lights? 2011 #3 package
I guess this is why I never let anyone drive my car without me accompanying them. I don't trust anyone to know how to operate a Toyota hybrid if they drive a non-hybrid. It's not like driving any other car.
Bisco, the Gen III can't have the SKS disabled by a button under the steering wheel, unlike the Gen II (assuming the OP listed his car accurately). I'm not sure what is meant by the "hybrid lock indicator" though. Sistersinhim, can you look up the light in the owner's manual, and tell us Toyota's name for it? The "Security indicator" is the blinking red light with a car and a padlock. That's the only one that says "lock" to me in any way, and according to the manual, it doesn't appear to do anything but blink. In fact, as long as you have the manual open, it should list the conditions that will make any warning light illuminate, blink, flash, vibrate, or explode. Might as well look up the cause there, too!
Just to comment: I don't think there's any technical reason the Prius requires this electronic ignition system, ie: it could have been designed with a conventional key ignition.
Yea but the fusion hybrid has a normal key like everyother car, and people will sit there and turn the key over and over again trying to get it to start the ice, when the car wont start the ice. I think the prius makes it a little mopre dummy proof.
Good point. Our previous Honda Civic Hybrid had convention key ignition, but it also never started on electric motivation only. Mechanical keys can cause problems too: I burnt out a starter because of of a sticking lock mechanism holding the starter motor on.
Yes, please. The main reason I read this thread is because I'd never heard of a hybrid lock indicator. agreed. We have a FFH and it is weird to turn a key and seemingly nothing happens.
It is called the security indicator. It never worked before this. The key with a slash doesn't light up anymore and I can't even find that one in the owner's manual.
