Hi Prius folk - Just bought a 2011 Three. Previously I had rented a 2009 while traveling. I was surprised to find no "key" slot. Normally, I understand this isn't an issue with SKS and all, but where I park at work, if you don't get in early enough to get into the first row of cars, you have to double park and leave your key in the car. I'm not particularly concerned with theft there (hospital parking lot - plenty of Mercedes and BMWs with their keys in the ignition) but where should I leave the FOB? It just feels too weird to take it out of my coat pocket and, what, leave it on the passenger seat? Under the "bridge". Am I the first to have wondered this (many many google searches did not enlighten me.) Hope to get some good answers on my first post.
Yeah, I hear ya on that...i was at the downtown fire station with underground parking shared with apparatus and we leave the keys in the ignition or on the dash so if people need to move them for some reason while we're out. I just left mine on the dash right above the steering wheel.
There was actually a thread from a Thai or Malaysian (?) where they double and triple park on the street!!! Parking attendants would then push the outside cars out of the way to let the inside cars leave. Sorry, I don't remember what the solution (if any) was.
Well i am sure if i left my key on the dashboard or in ignition all what would be left in the parking lot would be a peace of paper with "thank you" written on it and my car would be gone for ever !
What, leave key in your car so someone else can jump in and move it for you? Forget that. It's my car, I paid for it, I drive it.
+1 on the cup holder. When I take it in for service the Prius savvy advisors make sure you leave the FOB there. I happy also the couple of times that I have valeted the Prius the valet actually knew what was going on with the SKS and push button ignition.
Out here in the country we don't have them there kind of parking lots. When we run down to the eatin' place we park them ourself.
I place the FOB in the "sunglasses holder" and leave a sticky note in "the bridge". Sorry I have coins & loose odds & ends in the cup holders.
I know. I've never felt all that comfortable with it, but it is what it is. The lot has a pretty specific population of users, and you need an activated ID to get out of the lot even if you did try to take someone's car. Pretty easy to trade up, but they'd figure out who took their Bimmer when your prius is the one sitting in the lot day and night... Anyway, I always felt secure knowing that if someone really wanted to steal a car from there, there are much better choices.
OK - so Cupholder it is! Thanks for the replies. (I will continue to drive to the far reaches of the parking lot rather than having to double park and leave the key, but good to know what the 'norm' is)
My sunglasses are too big (over the glasses type) to fit in the holder, so that seems like a good place for the fob.
You do understand of course that if someone takes your car and kills someone else with it YOU are legally responsible! The lot operators telling you to do that does not resolve you of blame. They are morons!
That's not exactly correct, at least in California. If it is without permission, then there is no liability. If it is with permission, then there is limited liability. Mike
