If you think they're flying off the lots now, just wait until two weeks from now! In the video, he said "Priuses" 600 miles on a tank? The way people have started driving the past two weeks (accelerating slower and driving slower), I think getting more than 600 miles on a tank shouldn't be much of a problem. ...and people should have a much easier time achieving EPA mpg.
Obviously... One of the things that is driving people to Hybrids is the fact the cost to fuel up a car, along with the normal maintenance is becoming more of a dent into the pocketbooks. My main concern is that as people are looking to lighten the cost of travel via car by going into Hybrids, is the jump to Pure Electrics based on MPG. The problem I see at the moment is that Pure Electric Cars are going to suffer a drawback of the current lack of recharging places for most of our cities. The older Tesla cars have the small issue of bricking only if people manage to tap out the battery and this is may not be the issue for the other EV type cars, but the limitation of range will make the EV cars might have due to the lack of infrastructure to support them. Hopefully, this will be a stimulus to start including that possibility.
Wow! The crazy thing to me on that list? ... GM apparently still hasn't unloaded all the Malibu "hybrids" on their lots (falsely badged as a hybrid because it would turn the ICE off at red lights ) ... and GM aborted that gimmick 2 years ago ... back in 2010 ! But YEA ... go Toyota ! Up 78% ... obviously due to gas prices getting priced closer and closer to its true value. What a testimony to the dumb / short shortsightedness of our culture. We run out and buy 17mpg land barges when prices drop, and come to our senses when we get a dose of reality. Just a couple more dollars in gas price hikes, and dumbness will all but come to an end. At that junction, the much needed rail systems (found in japan and europe) we've put off in favor of multi billion dollar concrete roads will suddenly make sense. .
Really good numbers in February. Take rate is up to 3.3% for hybrids and plug ins. Sales rose 55% from a year ago verus 16% for all vehicles. prius liftback and v made up 54% of these electrified sales.
From article I don't think it should be on the chart though. Its now called an eco with eAssist http://www.automobilemag.com/reviews/driven/1112_2013_chevrolet_malibu_eco_driven/index.html you should compare to year ago, not the bad january it had. Still up 52.1% is great.
With Prius c, ESh, GSh coming, and rising gas prices... As well as hopefully sub-30k Rav4h.... i can see Toyota selling a lot of hybrids in 2013.
