I cant be the only one with the physically worn out but still functioning buttons on my MFD. I'm pretty good about finding things on the net and in forums. But, I cant find any information on this issue. I just bought a great 2005 Prius and everything works. Of course when I test drove it I saw the buttons were worn but I figured I'd just replace them at little cost. WRONG. According to Toyota those buttons only come with the MFD ($3900 as I'm sure most of you know). You can buy the bezel/panel for $75-$85 but it doesn't come with the buttons. So, what have you guys done? Does anyone have some buttons they'd like to sell? I guess I could repaint them but not sure what to do about the lettering.
I'll bet Steve Woodruff @ Autobeyours.com would have some of them and sell them to you. He has all kinds of parts for the Prius. I would suggest giving him a call.
Thanks Chief. I actually called there before posting my question this morning and the young person that answered said they didn't have any. But, he said it in such an off hand Walmart employee way that it made me wonder. Saw your post and decided to call back in the hopes of getting someone else on the phone. Sure enough, they do actually have them and one is coming my way now.
I can't imagine how the previous owner wore them out. The buttons on my MFD are hardly ever touched, given the controls on the steering wheel. Tom
Both the buttons on the wheel and on the MFD are worn. Also, the radio power button is worn. Not a very high number of miles either. I guess the previous owners just liked to constantly tweak things.
That looks like nail damage. Guessing the previous owner either had long nails, or liked to jab things instead of press them. Oily damage is usually just discolouration which I am guessing is much more common. But the only time I touch the MFD is when I go into EV mode. I press one of the buttons at random to get off the energy screen, then EV and if the screen changes to the Energy Monitor then it works.
I have two Prius (2004, 2006) stereos that work except for the CD players. Both have good buttons and they are easy to disassemble/assemble. PM me if you are interested. JeffD
Long finger nails. my Aunt gets those $50 fake nail jobs done. She uses her nails for everything. Although she doesn't have a prius, she has a Cougar and all the buttons that thing has looks like OP's pic
Thanks JeffD. I wont need to take you up on your kind offer. Today I'm installing a Kenwood DNX7140 that will totally replace the stock radio.
I installed a Pioneer 33HD ~$250 installed, but without activating MFD or Steering Wheel buttons. Another $125 would activate some buttons The original stereo pales in comparison with a good 3rd party stereo. JeffD
