I bought a used 2010 Prius, is there a way to tell if the car has been updated to fix the brake problem?? I have the Torque app if there's a way to find it in there...
What is the brake problem? Is it a squeak? I'm pretty sure our car didn't get the fix, it's fairly early n the model year. I noticed a slight bit of noise off-and-on, for a while, nothing recently. If you've not noticed anything, or are hearing very slight squeaking just when starting out, I'd be inclined to leave it as-is, give it time. I believe it's very minor.
I'd guess you'd have to have a mechanic check the codes, but I'm not certain. @Mendel: This http://priuschat.com/news/prius-brake-recall-a-little-more-information is the brake issue zm is talking about.
He is talking about the 'fix' they rolled out shortly after the Gen III release shortening the time it takes for the transition from regenerative braking to friction braking.
Have the car plugged in and check the codes, they can see if it has had it done. Also, I would imagine, the service department should be able to see it in their computer via the VIN if it has been done in the cars records.
I think I'll have them do that. I asked the previous owners, and they said they took it in, but weren't really sure if anything was done, do I'd rather just know for sure. There's a pot hole at the bottom of a slight hill on my way to work that is pretty much unavoidable and I hit it everyday, while I'm braking at that spot. Before my Prius, I drove an '04 Accord and every single time I hit that pothole I would 'lose' braking. I know it's the ABS loosening bc it think's it slipping - at least that's what I've gathered. I got used to it. But it's much much more pronounced in the Prius, thus I was wondering If I'm able to check myself without having to take it in.
They said they took it in for the 'fix' or just took it in for routine maintenance. Either way, just have it checked, it should take minutes of 'actual work' on their part. And don't think the fix takes it away. It lessened it for me, but it does not go away. Even though, I have never had an Oh Crap moment because of it and I've owned a Prius since 06'.
I asked if they had any troubles with braking in certain conditions and eluded to the recall, they said they never had any problems but they took it in (specifically for THAT i don't know for sure), but i just want to make sure. So i'll have them check. Even though I'm the second owner, and it has 38k on it, am I still able to get this fixed if it hasn't been already, because it's a Recall???
The first time it happens it scares the crap out of you! I have yet to do the recall on my 2010 PKG Five. I'm use to it now. I think you can call just about any dealer with the VIN# and they can tell you whats been done!Enjoy.
