Experienced PIP owners, what can I realistically expect EV range to be under these conditions: * Flat (no hills) * Paved city streets * Never over 35 mph * Stop and go city traffic * Modest year-round temperatures at sea level (SF Bay area) * One person in vehicle * No cargo Work commute is 16 miles in conditions described above. Any chance of remaining in electric only? No charging station at mid point of commute. Vehicle will be used 90 percent or more of the time for this purpose and a fully electric commute would be ideal. Thank you
I have gotten 22 to 23 mpg twice. On each and every downslope, stoplight, other braking situations, traffic slowdowns, your foot should be lightly on the brake pedal, but not actually braking. When doing this you will see the little charge indicator reveal itself. These are all charging opportunities and will increase your range.
If you're actually able to keep it at or below 35 MPH, I think you have a really good chance of making the whole commute in EV. You can rent a PiP from a Toyota dealer to give it a shot before you make your purchase. My commute isnt exactly like yours. From my home to my work is a 600-700 foot elevation drop over the course of 13 miles (although most of that drop is probably in the first 3-4 miles or so). There are two stretches where my speed can get up to 50-55MPH (about 3-4 miles worth) provided the traffic lights dont stop me. The rest of my commute is 40-45 MPH, all city, no freeway. I make it to work (13 miles) with about 2.5-3.0 miles of EV range remaining. Coming home, the uphill portions and the 50MPH stretch at the end really use up my EV range pretty heavily so I run out of EV around 1.5 miles from home (so I only get about 11.5 miles of EV driving home the same route).
Acceleration from stoplights eats EV range. So suburb conditions are more efficient than "city" driving. A/C usage cuts it down too. Keep that in mind. Fortunately, once you've went through the warm-up cycle, rapid on & off of the engine really helps out. People get really worked up about using gas until they realize how nice that works out for driving beyond EV capacity. The more scenic route for my commute takes me through the suburbs, with a variety of speeds from 45 to 55 and the occasional stoplight. It's 17.2 miles. The result varies between 400 and 550 MPG will a slight downhill bias. On the way back, without plugging in again, it drops to the low 100's. With a fresh recharges, it's in the 200's. For me taking the fast route, the 70 mph highway, it's 16.6 miles. The result to work is usually between 225 and 250 MPG. With a recharge there at work, the overall average is usually around 200 when I reach home. Also note that I'll take advantage of the HV/EV button on the way home, using the engine to preserve EV for use later in the evening. Doing that, I end the day somewhere in the 100's. Long story short, you'll see a substantial MPG boost regardless of your driving situation.
It doesn't take much. Everyone has a trip to take from time to time. Of course with tmy his current tank, it's been mostly local driving: 270 miles. 159 MPG
it won't go bad, if you're all ev all the time, the car will automatically run the engine every 124 miles or something so you don't have to worry about it. 16 miles of city driving is right on the cusp of battery capacity. i took a chance and it worked out for my 15 mile commute. rent one if you don't want to risk it.
While not a PiP owner, your commute sounds perfect for the PiP. Worst case scenario you might us a tiny, tiny amount of gas.
I am so close to being within ev only range in my commute to work from home. I am just one stupid hill away! I have a 2 mile hill in my commute that kicks it into hv. If it wasnt for that hill I would make it. Its only 11.1 miles round trip. I get about 345 mpg round trip.
EV miles is 21.7. Consumption is 999... thus it was all EV. Again this is slight downhill from work. So my commute home is mostly EV. Commute uphill to work I'm only getting about 13-14 miles of EV.
Expect to get 11-13 miles, anything above that and you will be happy. If you expect 16 and get 11-13, you will be unhappy. My commute is 5.9 miles, flat, speeds to 45 MPH, stop and go, I get about 12-14 miles on EV. Every morning my gauge says 11.8 miles EV range and I get at least that. Its all about expectations, set em low and exceed them. The car is rated at 11 EV range. I am happy.
15.8 mile round trip commute, always all electric with between .3-2.9 miles left. I do have to work at it. I have one larger hill and 2 small hills. intown driving 25-35 zones, short 2 miles of 45 zone. Most of the time I do not use air. Winter time is coming and I won't even get close then! and yes if you use all electric all the time and your cars does not start, then after 124 miles your car will start and warm up for about three minutes and shut back off and then go into all electric again. EnJoy!
No my entire commute home is downhill. I live near the beach; elevation 20. I work in the foothills; elevation 1500.
Lol, reminds me of when I was in my youth, I was driving in Pennsylvania, going down the mountain, and putting the 65 chevy in neutral and turning the ignition off. my first hybrid!
