So I let my brother drive the car and somehow he lost the spare key. Dealer quoted me around $250-$300 to get a new spare key. Is it possible to get anything cheaper than that? I've seen bunch of Metal keys on ebay. Can I jut buy one of those keys and use those instead of buying a new keyfob. I have 2005 Prius Package 6 with the smartkey system. So if buy the metal key will that let me start the car? Is it possible to get all the spare parts for the key and reprogram the fob by myself? How difficult is it? Anyone know? Ok, I will share what I know. #1, I am no expert. With that said, this is what I know. When I went through getting a second keyfob, the stealer told me that the black one would not work on our '09. Our '09 does have SKS, therefore I am assuming (hate to do that) that the reason the stealer told me it would not work was so they could enable the new key fob to work normally with all functions including SKS. SKS type keyfobs can be carried in your pocket or purse, and do not have to placed in the slot of the car to be able to drive the car. A non SKS (black logo) must be placed in the slot before you attempt to drive away. This explains what the difference is. There have been user's on PC Chat sucessfully doing the "chickendance" method with the silver keyfob and able to program everything including SKS with a new keyfob bought from a reliable source. You may or may not be successful with the black logo keyfob if you simply want to plug it in the dash every time you want to drive the car. You will not be successful trying to program a black keyfob to utilize the SKS on a SKS equipped Prius. New key fob question, please? | PriusChat AND Yet another silver/black key fob question | PriusChat If you read the two above post's (links) you will see that everyone is pretty much saying the same thing. I believe you will end up getting a "new silver logo" before you have "luck" with the programming. For the record, Toyota will use "Techstream" software when they program key fobs. They don't do the chicken dance method referred to here on Prius Chat. As per your question about the keyfob on Ebay. It will not work. It is used. You must have a new keyfob to program the car for the new keyfob. There are sources online that sell keyfob's. Google is your friend. Don't forget, silver for SKS, black for non SKS. Thank you for a prompt reply. I have the SKS system but I don't really mind taking my key out to lock, unlock or drive. So what I'm saying is SKS isn't that imp to me. Now with the programming directions provided; do I still need a brand new fob? So I guess I'm asking let's say I buy something off of ebay and it happens to be used. Can I still use the fob to program it to work with my car?
You can try it if you so choose, however AFAIK those before you who have reported here on Prius Chat say the used one's won't work. Ron

PRwanting Were you able to get the metal key programmed? I did the same as you... My original key fob has a silver logo and I purchased a black (no logo) key fob. I was able to program the fob to start the car but not for keyless entry. I figured I could use the metal key to gain access to the car and the fob to start it so I had the metal key copied at Wal-Mart but it wouldn't open the door. I figure it must have a chip in it? Is that about right?
I have a smart key prius. Like you I have been only able to program a black logo key only to start after inserting it in dash. However I have copied keys both blank of the key that would go in the fob, as well as toyota generic key from home depot, I believe it was Axxess+ #35 in my case for 2005 Prius. I am able to get the key cut and use it. Incidentally Axxess+ #35 is an old style metal key. But if it's cut section is same it can be used to open the door. I do not believe any door locks in gen 2 (and possibly even in later generations) prius use any chip when opening the door.
