"dead HV battery reads 217 volts

    Is there any way this could be the case? dealer says the 4th cell is blown and the battery is toast. engine codes are H/U battery codes P0A80/P3014.

    P0A80 says - Replace Hybrid battery pack
    1. HV battery assembly
    2. Battery smart unit

    P3014 says - Battery block 4 becomes weak
    1. HV battery assembly
    2. Battery smart unit

    That is what the DTC's are telling them.

    How many miles?

    There are 28 cells, each one rated at 7.2V. If one of them is producing 0V, it'd be pretty hard to notice by just the voltage.

    If it is a 2010 or later Prius, it should be a warranty item. If it is over 100,000 miles, 2007 Prius, it is not a warranty item. You might call ReInvolt to see if they may have a salvage pack that comes with a one year warranty.

    What happens when a 120,000 mile Prius shows up at a California Toyota service center with out of state registration? Do they honor the 150K battery warranty?

    129000, but could the battery be "shot" per the codes and still read full volts?

    Yes. The voltage rating for the HV battery is 208V but like most batteries it normally operates at a higher voltage.

    I monitor my battery voltage with a ScanGauge II and it normally reads in the 220-230V range, sometimes much higher right after regen braking. So one module pair would normally read about 15V so you could lose one module pair and still read in the 217V range.

    The only way to tell for sure would be to read each module pair which is what the battery management ECU does. It reads each module pair and reports any deviation.

    You could test each module pair with a voltmeter, or have someone else do so, and determine if a module pair was reading much lower than the other pairs.

    I was under the impression that the HV battery pack could be removed and opened at the dealer, all cells load tested, defective ones replaced and the pack put back into service. True, not true ??

    I believe toyota service tends to treat the entire pack a single unit. There are independent Prius service centers that will refurbish components of a battery pack. One of the most popular is Re-Involt. There are threads here that go into the detail of how to DIY the battery refurbishment if you want to go that route.
