I think not, with the risk of lightning. I am sure the plug has safety to prevent damage to the car. Just to be safe, I won't be charging it until it passes by.
i charged mine last night. i know you're not supposed to leave it full, but safety before battery worries!
No circuitry will protect anything from a direct lightning strike. The charge has just jumped between a cloud and the ground, so some dinkey circuits aren't going to do much. Surges from nearby lightning strikes maybe, but just dig out your insurance company's phone number if you get a direct (or very near) lightning strike.

I backed the car into the driveway this morning and charged it up. The inverter's ready to go too, if the power goes out.
