Heather, my 2007 Prius has been sounding a bit under the weather lately. There is a grinding scratching noise. This happens in either EV or HV modes and is most noticeable when bearing right. The tires are on their last treads, and a bit scalloped but that seems to me to be a different sound. What do people think?
That symptom, more pronounced turning in one direction, is usually typical of a CV joint going bad. Put the car on ramps or jack stands and check for signs of cracked CV rubber boots.
I've had that problem (at 130K) with our 2007. The tires had slight scalloping and the ride was a bit rough. Took in to a tire dealer and they lifted the front on jacks and rotated the wheels - problem showed up right away. I got quotes from 3 places (none were a dealer). Prices varied from $325 to $950. Went with one associated with my wife's family for $385.
