Ho folks, I am using 110v to charge my PIP. I start at 2:00 am, and end at 6:00 am. 4 hours total should be enough to re-charge the EV battery. However, it only shows 12 miles in the display. Is it normal? Thanks!
It's normal. Owner data on different threads featuring this question range from the low 10s to 16s. (the 16s are definitely outliers) Fully Charged EV Range | PriusChat Just eyeballing the data, you can see that your result is pretty much in the middle. We could do some statistical tests - but the results would be the same. Your result is right in the middle of normal.
The time to charge has nothing to do with how many miles it shows, as long as you did a full charge and get that message. The number of miles shown is some type of average over many previous full charges of how many miles you've gone. If it shows 12 miles on a full charge, you might get 10 miles on this charge (for example if you drive fast and accelerate hard on a freeway) or you might get 15 miles (for example driving 30 mph with minimal traffic). Now with the colder weather in NY (some 20's in the mornings) my estimated EV range is down to 10.4mi.
the timer has two options: start at set time or end at set time. so i guess your actual charge is not 4 hours
"End" means it will start charging when you plug in and ends when you set it or when its full? Or it will guess when to start in order to end at that time? I don't have TOU so I just charge whenever.
from http://www.toyota.com/t3Portal/document/om/OM47818U/pdf/sec_01-02.pdf: ■Charging timer function (finish time setting mode) ●The finish time setting mode should only be used as a reference for the time at which charging will finish. Charging may not complete at the finish time depending on the effects of the electricity supply, temperature etc. In this event, charging will continue until completed. ●If the function detects that charging cannot be finished on time, charging will start immediately, and will continue until fully charged.
I extended one more hour, from 1 am to 6 am. I get 12.8 miles this morning. May be I have been getting around 12 miles, and I just do not notice it. Thanks guys!
While it is true that time of charge has some effect on the display - for example, charge less than two hours and you will not get a "full" charge - so the EV range will be less than 10 miles - the effect on the estimate approaches zero as time charging increases past 3 hours. Assuming you've been charging at least three hours all this time, it's unlikely that your extension of charge time affected the estimate rise this morning.
No, it did not increase anything miles after adding one more hour. That's why I said it might have been around 12ish miles, but I just did not notice it.
Note again that these are two separate timers. It's not a start and end time, it's a start time for charge 1 and a "finish by" time for charge 2. Both charges will continue until the battery is full.
The important thing to remember is that the EV miles shown after you charge is an estimate of how far you can drive on EV only, based on your previous driving, not how long you charged, as long as it was a full charge. Then, depending on how you drive that day, you may get more or less than the estimate, because you can pick up miles by regen. You can also use up the EV miles faster, depending on driving conditons. There are other threads on this subject, if you are interested.
