With a setting of "65", it will definitely take longer. I crank mine up to "HI" and get the windshield almost totally cleared off in about 5 minutes, despite having sat outside all day in temps below freezing. And what's with the shouting of a compliant without an improvement suggestion? Show us that some thought has went into it by providing a request. Toyota has been receptive to feedback in the past. Electric heating comes with a price & capacity penalty. What would you like to be implemented?
If the AC was a heat pump then the defrost could use the hot and cold heat exchangers at the same time. This would allow defrosting without the ICE. Mike
PHV is a plug-in hybrid. It's purpose is to significantly boost MPG, not to be an EV. Sacrificing battery capacity for the sake of not using the engine doesn't actually fulfill that intent. Put it this way, how many owners would accept warmth blown on the windshield but no where else? We know a complaint would emerge about not also warming the cabin. Think about the penalty that would cause, how much quicker it would deplete the pack.
Hi John , I thought I had made it incredibly clear several times now. It is simple, most cars have access at the windshield to outside air, the Pip does not! One does not need heat to defrost. It is also clear that there is definitely a temp sensor that determines if the engine runs. After the car is outside for a while in cold weather, the engine runs. Nothing can be done about that. I must assume that Toyota reads our posts and will correct these deficiencies. I don't care where ones lives in the US temps of 32 F do come about everywhere, even Florida.
Conditions were not the same as yesterday, your system seems to work for a while, then the temp sensor kicks the engine in.
Assuming this is per a regular Prius: Any other car (Hondas) we've had over the year had an option in the regular air flow choices to direct air only to the windshield. Typically, there was: Vent High/Low (vent+heat) Heat Heat/Defog (the only regular Mode in the Prius that directs air to the windshield) Defog (all air to the windshield) (not available on the Prius) With the Prius the closest Mode is one that splits the air flow between the windshield and down by your feet. Yes, there's the hells-a-popping front defog mode, but I can't see living with that for an extended drive, and (I believe) it force-activates the the A/C. Anyway, just a request to Toyota: a regular "mode" that's windshield directed air only?
andy, when you say you can't get fresh air to the windshield, you mean without it hitting your feet as well, correct?
No, I mean at the windshield. If you attach a telltale composed of a thin piece of toilet paper on the windshield with scotch tape you will find that the only time you have air flow there is when the defrost button is on. Poor design.
In the mode shown on the display in this picture, you will get airflow towards the windshield and floor. And this mode is attained from cycling through the regular face/floor/windshield button, without the defrost button needing to be lit.
I thought we made it clear that you are mixing two seperate behaviors. PIP does indeed allow outside air. That's what the "LO" setting provides. You apparently want the defrost button to never trigger the engine, just like the regular blower modes. In other words, you would like a windshield-only option instead of the current defrost feature. That would be a take-away, which many will find unacceptable. Adding an additional option would be far more appropriate. Now, please be careful not to mix the two up anymore.
...wonder if portable dehumidifier like this might help...uses 22 watts (plug into inverter?). Run overnite to dry out car and keep on.

Before I needed to stick that in my car I'd forgo getting the plug in and just drive a lift back lol.
