    Are you a patent practitioner?

I have to admit that I've been a bit too lazy (yet) to read through any of these patents (I spend too much time during the day doing it that I can't seem to find the energy to do it at night...) - but - based on your observation above - it may seem to be an indication that '191 may be invalid in light of '595. (I.e. if there was an earlier disclosure by'595 of the claimed matter in '191). It doesn't indicate on the front page of '191 whether '595 was cited by the examiner (as is typical today via an asterisk(*)) - or if it was submitted by the practitioner/applicant.

    Interesting find...

As an aside, on the bench behind and to my left of the presenter is a belt and cone 'true' CVT.

No, just an engineer who is interested in hybrid technology. Sagebrush is right that the Toyota patent goes into the details of the computer control algorithms whereas that GM patent primarily cover the mechanical engineering aspects. I have no idea what the implications are under patent law.

Well - it sounded like you were one! :)

I'm a patent attorney, and I think it would be "fun" to check out the patent landscape - but just a bit more effort than I'm interested in expending at the moment.

My current focus is trying to plan out how to install heated seats...
