Guest Post: The Value of Short-term Energy Storage for Renewable Energy | Plugged In, Scientific American Blog Network
This article fairly well mimics my (not really mine, but one that I oft repeate!) that plug in EVs and plug in Hybrids have the potential to create a large disaggregated battery bank, that would allow better use of PV and wind. Simply by having EVs plugged into the grid, allows them to sell back tot he grid at times of high grid demand, and buy back at times of surplus, resulting in a win/win for everyone! With enough EVs and Plug ins, we wouldn't really need aux batteries on the grid, as they would already be there in dual purpose (read more financially efficient) car batteries. In the US we buy ~16 million cars per annum. If 25% were batterie equipped, in 5 years you would have 20 million large battery banks plugged into the grid. Non of this requires rocket science technology, as it all currently exists in relatively simple forms today. Icarus
I will gladly plug-in my battery at a charging station and allow two-way flow in exchange for 1 cent per kWh electricity like I get on my EV subscription.
