Unfortunately this "style" of coaching is all too common in youth sports, not the norm but too common.
I agree with this. The sad truth is, that he got caught with sensational video available, making it a public viewing bonfire. The even sadder truth is, had his behavior been almost the same, minus the actual "physical" assaults on his players? He'd probably still be coaching...and just called "Fiery" and "Rebellious". I've played for coaches whose coaching "style" crossed the line. I was hoping they were a dying breed, but I guess it never really fades totally away.
Rutgers was fully aware of Rices "coaching" style. They praised him as "intense", "committed", and effective in gaining "top performance". The reason they didn't fire him initially was because he was doing exactly what they hired him to do...other than win. Only reason they did fire him is it went viral on the web. It's moneyball for colleges.
