Why wait? Do your research, find a Prius Plug In that meets you specs, place a deposit, get a good deal on a one way rental and go fetch it. Best deals appear to be NJ, NY, and CT.

 

You better not. Just hop a flight to the dealer with the best price. Negotiate everything up front.

 

I suggest a CARB state to get 150,000 mile batt warranty.
This would be MD, NJ, NY...most Northeast states but probably not VA (not a CARB state).
So get on up here see the DC Cherry Blossoms and stop in MD for a PiP.
MD just lost PlugIn incentives unexpectly so may be better deals now.

EDIT: OK please come to Virginia since FL is not a CARB state, it should not matter to you that VA is also not a CARB state. See JimboPalmer post below for details. It seems however most of the good PiP deals I heard about were on the DC Beltway, so that would be VA or MD.

 

Hmm. I have, from time to time, shipped my PHEVs to Colorado dealers in exchange for other merchandise (I get back odd and hard to find 4WD vehicles) and have also shipped one to a buyer in FL as well as a Rav4 EV to FL too.
I believe that you need to live in the 150K mile state to get the 150K warranty? Am I having a junior moment?

 

I know it needs to be registered and so have plates from a 150k state continuously to remain a 150k car. State Law may very well make registering it out of state illegal, unless you are in the military or a full time student.

You cannot legally register in another state in most cases.

Here are the cases:
(1) Obvious good case - you register and buy in same CARB state
(2) Register in CARB in but buy in different CARB state
(3) Register in non-CARB state but buy in a CARB state
(4) Register in CARB state but buy in non-CARB state
(5) Obvious bad case- Register and buy in same non-CARB state

I was thinking (incorrectly?) the warranty based on the state of purchase.

So buying and registering it in a CARB state are not enough, if you operate it in a non CARB state, it is not covered. WJTracy 1) and 2) seem true, 3) and 4) seem to be false.

Keep in mind East Coast (MA, NY, VA, MD, NJ) are the states that have been giving the best PiP deals so far.

 

Does anyone have any idea WHY Toyota is holding off releasing the PiP in other states beyond the original West and East coast rollout, and has not announced when other states would be added? There aren't even any good rumors in this forum! There has to be some kind of marketing reason. It's really frustrating seeing national Toyota ads on TV which mention all of the Prius models EXCEPT the Plug-in.

 

I would like to think Toyota did market research and determined CA and the Northeast states were the hot markets for the Prius Plug In. In the past ten years, my wife and I have purchased three vehicle out of state. It's a hassle, but worth it to get the vehicle you want. I was lucky, only had to travel two hours to Northern Virginia to get a good deal on a closeout 2012 Prius Plug In. Others in near by states could do the same thing.

 

I am also worried that Toyota is not pushing PiP harder...I was hoping PiP is here to stay. Note that the majority of the roll-out states (except VA and a few others) are CARB states. So I am curious if this means all of these first PiPs are CA-certified, and we are waiting for non-CARB PiPs.

 

I like to think that they are getting ready for the big roll out of new battery tech for 2015 with a 50+ EV range plug-in hybrid. Just a wish, I guess. No Source.

 

My sad guess is that the same folks who thought it would be 'cool' two have two Prius v names for two completely different cars, are also in charge of the nationwide PHV roll out.

I guess out-of-state purchase has some disadvantage if the dealers are not trained to do service. But presumably most issues could be handled by regular Toyota dealers.
