Folks, While many have posted DIY ATF changes, I am thinking of having the dealer do it since I have an extended 7 year/100K miles platinum coverage on my Prius and I don't want to give them any reasons to deny coverage in the future. If you paid less than $80 for a dealer ATF change (including Toyota ATF-WS fluid), please post your numbers and preferably the dealer name/location as well. I will then show the lowest fee to my dealer here to try to get them to charge me the same. Thanks.
355 Toyota quoted me approx $230 to complete the fluid replacement which included parts and labor. I'd agree with sfv41901. You will have a hard time finding any dealer which would do it for less than $80 to include both parts and labor. At a separate dealer, I believe Jerrys Toyota, the price per Qt was approx $12 if I recalled correctly.
The $80 is not a quote from my local dealer, just something I thought would be a reasonable threshold considering the minimal effort/time involved. Thanks.
My dealer in CT (A1 Toyota) has done my ATF three times (60k mile interval) for $100 each time. It is a simple drain/refill, there is no "Flush" procedure as it is not needed even though many dealers will mistakenly offer a flush at a higher price of course. JeffD
There IS no flush, only drain and fill. If a dealer tries to sell a flush, walk away, they have no clue.
That's what I recalled reading on this forum when I talked to my dealer. When my dealer gave me the $230 I rolled my eyes and said no thank you. I didn't have time to have him check the actual fluid replacement procedure and adjust the quote accordingly. I'll have to say, I'm sure my dealer would have no problem correcting the price if I gave him time to actually look at the procedure. Also want to make sure the OP gets the right pricing for just a drain and refill (3-4 Qts) vs a full flush.
Today my dealer Kirk Toyota, changed my ATF for the second time, 90,000 miles for $89.75 $42.50 in labor.
$80 or thereabouts is very reasonable. Showing up with someone's lowball offer (which might be a "get you in and upsell you ploy") may backfire, if they do decent work at fair price. That's worth something. I mean, how much would you charge? Now consider you're a dealership, with wages, rent, equipment, licensing and god knows what? Or DIY? It does not cancel the warranty. The parts department will have what you need, for around $40.
It's a good idea to replace the ATF fluid at 30K and every 60K after that. But it is definitely not necessary for extended warranty coverage.
