We are driving to Canada for the upcoming long weekend (taking off the 5th). The major stopping attractions are the Niagara Falls and then loop around to Thousand Islands. It is going to add more than a thousand miles on HV mode. On one hand, I am sad that my EV ratio would get lower. On the other hand, there is no better plugin for this job. Remember, PiP is our only family vehicle as my wife takes public transportation to work. We normally do not use gas during the weekdays -- heck, we don't even use a full charge. We average about 255 Wh/mi (132 MPGe) on electric miles. We'll put the gas engine to good use with this freedom drive. I am glad Toyota engineers decided to optimize PiP for all driving conditions with either fuels. For the HV miles I have racked up (mostly in the weekend), I am averaging 54 MPG. I will surely report the result of my trip. There will be many things to load up the cargo. 21.6 cubic feet of cargo volume should be plenty enough for both of us.
Thanks, will do. I'll reset my Trip B before we head out. I'll bring my EVSE in case I can get a charge at the hotels.
We've been going to a lot of parties around LA this month. My EV miles are way down too. Trying to grab charges at as many midway spots as I can find. I've normally had 1000+ mile tanks for past few months, but not June/July. iPad ? HD
Drove more than 300 miles. Averaging 57 MPG with speed mostly between 65-70 mph. Started with a full charge and have 5 miles saved up. This thing is efficient! At these speed, Gen2 would get 47 MPG.
Result from yesterday. Fully charged overnight at the hotel. Yesterday, I used the remaining 5 EV mile on the 1-2 mile traffic jam near the rainbow bridge and at the Canadian border entry line. The AC was running for a good 45 mins at crawling speed. Having the ICE not cycling on/off was great. Unfortunately, that brought the average speed down.
We should pass by Syracuse coming down from Thousand Islands. I will need to gas up. Gas is more expensive in Canada. The price is like 129.2. I assume it is 1.292 per liter. Strange it is in cents instead of CAD. Anyway, another update. I was able to get a charge at all 3 hotels. Better than expected. Averaging 60 MPG.
Here is the final result. 18.5 gallons used for 1,039 gas miles. That's 56 MPG on gas. 9.4 kWh on 71 electric miles. After adding 15% charging loss, it comes out to 254 MPGe on electricity. Most of the gas miles were driven with a target speed of 70 mph. The gas efficiency was very impressive. For electric miles, I switch to EV mode on light, low speed traffic. I used EV miles on QAW (I-401?) rush hour traffic (forgot it was a workday). I also used EV miles from Hotel#2 to the Ontario Zoo and hotel#3 to Boldt Castles tour. The drive on the Thousand Islands Parkway was a quiet ride with nice view. My tire pressure isn't that high. 39 psi front and 37 psi rear. A/C was used the entire time. There were 2 passengers (in addition to myself), 2 luggages with drinks and snacks. I did not have to gas up in Canada. Gas refuel time is a few mins for each stop, total of around 5 mins for both. Three full EV charges would've taken about 9 hours but they were done overnight. Asking for charging area at the hotel lobbies and finding the plug took longer than gasing up 18.5 gallons. EV ratio sux but for the nature of the trip, I am glad I could take advantage of gasoline high energy density and refueling speed.
