Hi All! I don't know if this is the right place to post, but I need a new fob for my 2012 Prius. My daughter's purse was stolen yesterday, and in it was my set of keys with the fobs for my Prius and Sequoia. Does anyone here know of a good place to purchase online that is reputable, or should I go to the dealer? I don't want to spend an arm and a leg and give my first born away just to buy one. I tried looking around the threads for this topic but couldn't find anything, so sorry if this is a duplicate post. Thanks for your input.
short of going to the dealer (expensive) be very careful, there can be a lot of problems programming a new fob. do a lot of research, and don't lose the one you have or it gets really expensive. there is a thread here by member 'ovni' who knows something about fobs. all the best!
Thank you! Yes, I still have one left, and the metal chip with the 5 digit numerical code that the dealer said not to lose or it would be even more expensive to buy a new fob. I haven't checked ebay yet. I found a place online that sells used ones that can be reprogrammed but warned that dealer re-programming is iffy. Is programming something I could do myself?
there is something called the chicken dance. no i'm not kidding. try searching for it here, i have no clue what it is. as i said, be careful, people have spent hundreds of dollars, only to find out the fob they bought cannot be programmed to their cars. others have been successful tho.
I've seen it. Somewhere in Gen II Main Forum. Requires a virgin, stop watch, and closing the door 6 times.
Nonsense. Some regions have stopped giving out the metal chips because people lose them. Your nearest Toyota parts dept can always look up your 5 digit code and all you need is your ID and vehicle registration to prove that you're the owner.
Seriously!? Me too! Anyway, here's my quote: Dealer #1: $700 for 1 Sequoia transponder key+ fob+programming, & 1 Prius smart key+programming. Dealer #2: $925 for same as above. ARE YOU KIDDING ME!!!???? My cousin-in-law said the Toyota dealer she bought her new Avalon from in So. Cal. replaces two keys for free. Not my dealers. Dealer #2 kindly gave me the name of a reputable locksmith, and his quote for just the Sequoia key+fob+programming: $125. I guess I can live with that. He's checking into if he is able to do the Prius key. Keeping my fingers crossed... I didn't realize that what I've been carrying around in my purse was worth more than gold.
I purchased 2 used key fob's on ebay for $50/each and paid another $60 to have both programmed by Pop-a-Lock of West LA. $160 for 2 programmed keys! Both work perfectly. I would be more concerned with the factory cut key blade attached to the fobs! If your daughters purse was stolen, they must have her drivers license and address! That means regardless of getting new key fobs, they have the original cut key blades and the cars location. Lets just hope they took whatever cash was in there and dumped the rest.
Good news (if you can say that in this situation) I talked to my insurance agent (State Farm) and the key fobs are covered under comprehensive coverage. Since I don't have a deductible on that part of my insurance they won't cost me a thing to replace!
Yeah, but making a claim on your insurance may increase your rates. If your rates go up, depending on how long, you could be paying a lot more $$$ in the end. We had to replace our windshield due to a large crack from a foreign object thrown up on the freeway. We decided to pay for it out of pocket ($400+) rather than through insurance (State Farm) because our agent couldn't definitively say whether making a claim would raise our rates or not. Plus we have a $250 deductible, so the savings wouldn't have been much.
So just look up Prius 2014 Virgin Key FOB? online and buy one to program it yourself via the walking bird?
