"Maintenance Required" light came on. Sticker said maintenance due at 29,061. I was at 29,045 so I figured I'd take it in for an oil change. I told the service tech who was checking me in that I'd do my own air and cabin filter... then he began staring at his screen for longer than I'd prefer waiting. Finally, he turned to me and said, "You don't need an oil change. You bought it at 24k and it's at 29k. These are 10k oil changes. They did filters before you bought it. You are good to go. See you in 5k." Can't believe it! An honest tech! Anyone else experienced this phenomenon?
They should've checked the fluids, brake pads, and rotated the tires though, while they were resetting the maintenance reminder. SCH-I535
I'm not going to pay $29 for a rotation when I can get it done for free elsewhere. He taught me how to reset maintenance reminder myself. Check brake pads on a Prius with 29k on the dial? Seriously? My 08 Gen II w 113k still has original pads.
Checks are not always checking just for replacements but checking for potential issues. A pad could be misaligned and wearing unevenly, or a brake could be dragging, or who knows what. Although I doubt most dealership techs will go through the trouble of checking thoroughly, they are things that you should probably check yourself.
