I have 85,000 miles on my 2008 Touring Prius. On the last tire rotation, I noticed quite severe cupping on the front tires along with toe-in wear on the inside of the tires. I had the alignment checked and it was off by quite a bit. I figure that the cupping wear is from warn shocks, and got an estimate to get them replaced with KYB brand for $250.00 - including the alignment. My questions are; what is the right KYB shock for the Touring edition? Does this diagnosis seem correct? What should I be cautious of? Thanks!
KYB is the oem manufacturer, as there aren't many choices for the prius, 250$ for shocks installed with an alignment is a good price, why not replace the rears also? If you google your way around you'll find prices for shocks, and various parts needed.
I am considering the rears also, but there was no tire wear indicating that they were bad. But probably best to get it all done at once.
I had a broken rear coil on my 2005. I had both coils replaced and while I was at it the shock absorbers to. It's hard to believe the difference it made in handling. The car drove like a new car. I would not have expected this from rear coils and shocks.
I find it strange that there does not seem to be any difference in replacement KYB shocks for the Touring Edition vs the standard Prius. I know that one of the foolproof methods of determining a Touring Edition is to look at the painted stripes on the rear shocks, but the replacement ones are all the same.
