Well it's only 2.7 miles, so 1/10 of a gallon and probably not more than 1-3 times a year. Shouldn't discourage you from going out for coffee... Besides, I like your numbers.
Retired4999 : Just curious - in that -22 weather and anything close - what is your EV estimate saying ? I'm down to 9.6 for that read in the Boston area since we hit zero... Still getting an actual of about 11 One interesting item - my car sat at the airport for 2 days. Cold when I left but it was a pretty warm 50 for my return. Yet my EV estimate remained at 9.6 so I'm thinking the estimate is purely based on the recent activity and not taking current temps into consideration keep the numbers coming
it occurred to me, as i was driving home tonite at 9 degrees, that my range hasn't dropped much since the temps dropped into the 30's or so. it's been around 12.5 for quite a while now. i wonder how that fits in with giora's graph? i think i did last winter, but i can't remember. i'll have to give that a try.
I think one of the main factors on actual range is charging temp. Mine is sitting outside, in my graph I included only trips immediately after charging with minimum difference between charging and driving temps. Are you charging in warmed-up garage?
yes, it's unheated, but falls somewhere between the house temp and outside temp. for instance, when it was 9 outside, it was 39 in the garage. so, you maybe correct on the charging theory. i guess i would need a scangauge to measure the battery temp after sitting outside and then see how many miles i travel in ev. it would be interesting to know the battery temp after charging in a 39 degree garage, then after driving in 9 degrees for 1/2 an hour, then sitting in 9 degrees for an hour, and then driving another 1/2 hour.
I think people overestimate how much charging heats up the battery. Just yesterday after charging there was only a 1 degree temp difference between the battery and the coolant temp (obviously after sitting overnight). Also, fwiw, a garage definitely seems to limit how low your range will go. I have yet to go below 12.4 for an initial range. And it's been below zero here.
Heated garage to 45 degrees f and my starting EV range was 9.8 this morning. So mine is still slowly going down. I did not record last years low point but if my mind can remember back that far it was about 9.6 for a low point.
True. I think another big factor during the winter is your EV ratio. If you have a really high EV ratio, it will be much harder to have a large range. On the flip side, if you have a low EV ratio that means you have a lot of opportunities to use EV at it's biggest strengths. In other words...if someone has a EV ratio under 30% and have a range of under 10, they probably aren't maximizing their EV usage.
Or it's winter in Wisconsin and -25 below and going up and down hills and going out for coffee for no reason, other than to solve all the worlds problems!
I was more referring to the other people that have really low EV range and it's not near as cold as Wisconsin.
