Hi. I just bought a 2005 prius, 75k mils, literally a little old lady owned it. Took in to Toyota today for oil change and checkup. All was O.K., but I remembered reading something about not overfilling the oil. I just went6 out and checked and it is over full by 1/4 in. They put in 5 qts with filter. How bad is that ? Also have gotten 48-50 mpg on fist half tank. Jon
In my understanding, it's not a good thing because it creates a situation in which there is oil sloshing around. Not that it'll cause irreversible damage; it's just not optimal. Unfortunately, once you leave the dealership, you might have a hard time convincing them they did anything wrong. So it becomes a question of how to get the excess out. Other than loosening the screw with something to catch the oil, I can't think of anything.
If you have the time, you should bring it back to the dealer and have the oil drained out. The car would be overfilled with only 4 quarts of oil, by putting 5 quarts in, it would be severely overfilled. I'm thinking the tech put in 4 quarts and not 5. The paperwork may show 5 but if it's the dealership, 4 quarts is more likely what they did. Probably showing 5 quarts to charge you more money for another quart. If you can do this yourself, you can also just go under the car and drain a little oil out by loosening the drain plug. In the future, you may want to avoid that dealership.
congrats and welcome. this happens every time i have the dealership change the oil. i picked up a nice little inexpensive suction pump at sears for use through the dipstick tube. takes 5 minutes to correct their error. all the best!
I like bisco's idea better than crawling under the car. In reality, you could get a long see thru tube and siphon it out. The see thru would help ensure you don't suck any down lol.
LOL. If you attempt to do this, make sure the tube is thick enough to get what you want out in 1 pass. Wouldn't want to do it again.........
