I think hybrids are more economical than diesels.

And I can prove it. Check this out.

    Toyota Prius 50mpg
    Ford Fusion Hybrid
    Honda Accord Hybrid 47mpg

    VW Touareg V10 TDI: 15mpg
Dodge 3500 6.7l diesel: No official MPG figure, but drivers report about 12mpg

    I win.

No problem with characterization of TH but there is one 'wild card' about audio systems.

All audio systems have various noise sources that distort the final signal in subtle ways. So I have a friend to loves his tube-audio system and I understand why. Then there are the curious distortions of speaker housing and everything from the microphone and all parts in between. Even our 'ears' have individual characteristics that distort what we hear and age changes our ears over time. So if someone wants to wax on the good old days of 8-track tapes and tube audio, I smile and say 'I remember them too' and wish them well.

Ah, the good old days. I remember when failed 8-track cartridges and cassettes used to fill the landscapes, tapes gently fluttering in the breeze.

Tubes have more electrical distortion than modern transistors & therefore less accurate sound reproduction.
Nice baiting. Well, a gasoline hybrid might beat a regular diesel, but it won't beat a Diesel Hybrid given the same car, engine size, etc. A Toyota Auris (prius c) 1.4 diesel is rated by the EU at 74 mpg. The Auris with Toyota's hybrid system, to enable EV modes and turn-off the engine periodically, would easily boost that score to 85 (greater than the 72mpg of the gasoline-hybrid).

For clarity, that quote was mine, not Kurt's. I've made the same copying-and-pasting mistake myself in the past, though, so this isn't a criticism, just a clarification.

This is something of a tangent. Throughout this thread, all you've done is say that a diesel is better than a hybrid, by using two completely irrelevant sets of stats, and that's why I decided to make the opposite argument using the same technique. You haven't mentioned diesel hybrids until this post. So you can't just suddenly say now that this was your argument.

Incidentally, PSA make several diesel hybrids.

I've never thought diesel alone is the answer. Mainly because of poor city MPG. The Jetta Wagon TDI and Auris diesel I cited (in another post) is just one step towards my ultimate goal : A Prius or Auris or Jetta hybrid with the petrol ripped out & replaced with Toyota's best diesel engine. I think the engine's high compression & lack of throttle retriction makes it the most efficient ICE. :)

Someone converted the original Honda Insight to a diesel-hybrid, and as I always expected, it got over 100 miles/gallon economy.
