If it is that taxes pay for the cost of use, forget it. That is overwhelmingly trucks, and they pay a small fraction.
MY point was that maintenance costs are but a teeny part of the real cost of consumption.

Highly recommended that you learn what an externality cost means.

 

The justification for raising taxes has absolutely no legislative enforcement for such claims...absolutely none. That is the point. Finding a situation where A=B does not change this point. For example, the Stimulus was to pay for "shovel ready jobs". It did not by the administrations own admission. (This is not a political post, just one example of many that could come from both sides.) So what exactly did all the money pay for? It was sure touted as being for infrastructure.

Well of course. That's true of any complex system, where you need people to monitor & keep it functioning.

 

Paying for road maintenance is just a subset of the actual road costs. It doesn't include the capital cost of building them in the first place, nor the improvements added later.

 

There is little in common between a competent, efficiently run organization and a government bureaucracy.
