Thing rarely go wrong with a Prius, but when they do, they often cost $3500 to $5000 to repair. If you have $9,800 and can let $5000 sit in a readily accessible asset, sure.
How did the owner get this car? Customer left it to him and he fixed it? The car's history is very important, not so much the history between you and the shop owner. A 2006 with 184k miles is reasonable at $4800.....but price doesn't tell the entire story. The mileage on this car is already beyond the designed service life of a Prius set by Toyota.
Thanks for this info. The car is for my nephew who is still in college and has little extra cash for repairs.
I should say that I know both the owner (responsible driver) AND the guy who works on it - very good reputation. The owner kept in in really good condition and just had it state inspected. But, maybe we should be looking for something with less mileage.......?? Thoughts??
If this car is for your nephew, who is in college and doesn't have a lot of money to spare, I would not buy this car. Unless of course, the owner will provide very cheap labor in fixing the car when it needs attention. A low mileage Prius is VERY RELIABLE, but a high mileage Prius, may or may not be reliable.

My next newbie question: I have been reading the thread on the person who is switching to a Subaru. I dearly love my 1996 Outback, but I am considering switching to a Prius. I am interested in the low clearance issue as I live on a dirt road that has its share of holes, bumps, limbs, snow, etc. What do you all think?
Oh Dear. You guys have burst my Prius bubble! I cut my teeth on used Toyota Supra's and was hoping to find an excuse to go back. But, I hope to live on my wooded acreage for at least 20 more years. Thank you all for your input.
